What is a Sound Technician
Sound Technicians work either in production or post-production depending on the specialism. During production Sound Technicians work to record sounds across various locations. In post-production Sound Technicians will assist in creating the soundtrack from the various sources.

In this role you will have the opportunity to work across a range of industries including advertising, radio, TV, film and theatre.


Become a Sound Technician in Production
Working to the brief and with producers and performers,  you will be expected to set-up the recording equipment as to gain the desired audio. Technical know-how will be a must when assembling and positioning equipment to create the right artistic effects and checking the sound quality. You will also be responsible for recording the sound onto digital devices and having this sent to the Producer, Director and post-production team.  Furthermore, you will be responsible for the maintenance of the equipment and organising any servicing and repairs.

Become a Sound Technician in Post-Production
Post-production requires individuals with an eye for detail. Throughout post-production, you will work to synchronise the dialogue, sound effects, and music with the picture. You will work to the specifications of the sound designer or supervisor. Depending on the scale of the production you may work within a sound team. To create artistic impact you may also be required to add extra sound effects.

How to Become a Sound Technician
Experience is the key to becoming a Sound Technician. You can get experience by volunteering at local productions or radio stations, working in recording studios or by working with bands to set up their sound equipment.

Aside from experience, you could also look to gain qualifications in related subjects such as music technology, media studies, media production or sound engineering.
