How to become a Location Scout

What is a Location Scout?
Exactly what is says on the tin! A location Scout is responsible for finding the right location(s) to meet the requirements of the script. More often that not, a Location Scout is also responsible for overseeing the logistical feasibility of a location, and working with primary stakeholders (eg. government) to find solutions when required.

From Set To Location
Even with all the wonderful technologies we have today, sometimes it is simpler to film on location rather than trying to re-create a scene on set or in post-production. Often Directors will want to make scenes more authentic by filming the ‘real’ thing and will have a good idea of the locations they want to film in. This is where a Location Scout comes in.

Finding The Right Location
Based on the script requirements and the brief from the Director, the Location Scout will set out to find the ideal locations. A skilled Location Scout will always be assessing each location to see how suitable it is for filming, looking at everything from the lighting on a building to the hustle and bustle of a street –  it’s the small details that count.
