Technical Project Manager/Lead Engineer

Cardiff

Whisper will be delivering the Paralympics coverage for Channel 4 from Cardiff (August 2024) and we hope to attract many future exciting projects to Wales.

This role will act as the central technical contact for all productions produced from our Cardiff Facility,
managing resources across both equipment and personnel. A strong knowledge of remote production
workflows, industry innovations are essential for this role, as is relationships with technical providers and manufacturers.

Primary Responsibilities:
* Lead Engineer on all productions within the Remote Production Facility
* Oversee all bookings and manage resources, with the assistance of a booking co-ordinator
* Client facing role with a focus on discussing and agreeing tech specs for new and ongoing jobs
* Operate as the Tech Manager/EIC on productions and build a pool of freelancers able to fulfil the roles within a remote production facility
* Act as the conduit between productions and technical provider (Timeline) who will provide all additional facilities and personnel that are not part of the permanent installation
* Training and mentoring junior technical staff will be a key function of this role and positive and pro-active approach to this is critical
* Ensure the equipment is well maintained and be proficient in fault findings

Other Responsibilities:
* Involvement in planning of longer-term strategic projects - this could be leading on technical installations including selection and co-ordination of suppliers - high level design or planning, overseeing the framework and managing the final implementation
* Provide technical solutions for Production requests across the wider business - discuss options and give input for additional Production value
* Assist in preparation for contract bids and be part of the team that present and pitch to prospective clients
* Generate RFP's and Tech Specs that capture full requirements for third party suppliers
* Act as primary liaison for third party tech providers - such as OB companies, power, connectivity, lighting, event or venue tech teams
* Appraise third party quotes to ensure they meet our technical requirements and advise production on the best vendor solution based on technical suitability and cost
* On-site - be the conduit between Production and suppliers, ensure that the technical rig and rehearsal are kept on schedule, technical processes are in line with best practice, be responsible for any required technical decisions, check that facilities are fully tested and end-to-end tests are carried out - be accountable for the successful technical delivery of the event and take overall technical responsibility
* On-site - ensure that all technical staff and third-party engineering suppliers operate safely and in accordance with UK Health & Safety guidelines
* On-site - monitor and assist on any issues arising in specific technical areas, ensuring all technical areas are made aware of issues - follow up any technical issues to ensure that resilient solutions are in place

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
* Proven background in live broadcast technical operations or production engineering
* Detailed knowledge and understanding of remote production workflows
* Previous experience as team or project lead
* Excellent communication skills
* A Team player with a strong capability in relationship management
* Depth of experience working in a live production environment and working closely with Production and Editorial teams
* Understanding of Production needs and requirements, proven ability to interpret Editorial requirements and to offer engineering solutions
* Ability to multi-task across projects running concurrently
* Willingness to innovate and design creative solutions

Desirable Experience:
* Experience or knowledge in cloud production
* International experience

Working Days & Location:
* The role is based in Cardiff.
* As required by projects, weekend working will be required.
* There may also be some work on site at event venues or 3rd party locations.
* Lieu days will be given for any days worked over a five-day week.
* Whisper offers the option of flexitime hours subject to production requirements.
* This is an office-based role but Whisper allows 4:1 hybrid working where production requirements allow.
