Senior News Editor, Curation

London

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE


We are looking for a senior news editor to oversee the curation of the news front pages and to ensure our audiences meet the right content at the right right time on our website and app. This is a key role in our senior leadership team, and would suit a highly motivated and creative leader with deep experience in journalism and the ability to inspire others. This is a 12-month contract for maternity cover.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

This editor will lead a team of dedicated curators responsible for day-to-day curation of the frontpage and app homepage. You will work collaboratively to develop strategies and tactics that will showcase our best content across the week, with the flexibility to adapt quickly to breaking news. You will know how to shape and display our journalism to drive audience growth, with an eye for what makes a striking front page and compelling sell for a story, in line with BBC News public service values. The role is also an important voice in product development of the homepage and app.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITES AND IMPACT

• Lead and motivate a team of journalists responsible for the day-to-day curation bbc.co.uk/news, bbc.com/news and BBC News app
• Give daily direction to the team on priorities for curation, including story selection, headlines and thumbnails, and ensure workflows are effective and streamlined
• Take part in wider editorial discussions to shape coverage that works for different audiences, planning sophisticated rollouts that take into account time of day and days of the week
• Work closely with the planning, social, growth and audience teams to make sure we take a data-informed approach to best practice, reaching new audiences and recirculation
• Work collaboratively across News and Nations and Regions and the wider BBC to ensure audiences get the best of the BBC
• Safeguard BBC journalistic and editorial standards, support the BBC brand and enhance reach, reputation and the impact of the BBC.
• Lead on team management activities including workflows, recruitment, development and training

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE - KEY CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

• Excellent editorial judgement and experience of leading curation teams to deliver high-impact journalism in text and video, in a high-pressure breaking news environment
• Demonstrable experience of translating high-level strategy into audience growth, with a clear tactical approach
• Deep understanding of audience habits across different times and different days, and how to curate content ensure they are served the right pieces at the right time
• Evidence of an open and curious mindset that embraces change, and is able to balance the needs of breaking news and planned coverage
• Experience of building and managing diverse, inclusive and high-performing teams, and in developing new talent
• Ability to unite teams behind our BBC values and behaviours; role modelling them to lead, engage, inspire and create a sense of purpose and belonging
• Convincing and persuasive communication skills to influence teams, as well as senior stakeholders, and an ability to establish effective and collaborative relations across BBC departments, and external agencies/stakeholders where required.
