Background

The Computer Says Maybe podcast is seeking a London (or surrounding areas)-based podcast editor/producer for a 3-month trial engagement beginning July 2026, with the potential for extension based on mutual fit and organizational needs. The anticipated time commitment is approximately two days per week to start, with the possibility of expanded scope as production grows.

Computer Says Maybe is a Webby-nominated podcast about the politics of technology. We aim to stay ahead of emerging technology and policy issues, and take a progressive, anti-oligarchy stance. We are especially interested in amplifying the work of leaders who are driving toward more just and equitable futures.

We're looking for an editor who brings both technical mastery and sharp editorial instincts to the post-production process and can take content (interviews, discussions, solo commentary) and craft it into engaging, high quality podcast episodes.

This is a contract role focused on owning the post-production process end-to-end for one episode per week, with potential to scale to additional episodes, formats, or broader multimedia production workflows over time. The role will report directly to the Showrunner and will involve a high degree of autonomy and creative ownership.

While the initial focus of the role is podcast production, we're specifically looking for someone comfortable working across both audio and video workflows as we expand our publishing and content strategy.

This isn't a technical support role. We're looking for someone who can think editorially, make strong creative judgements independently, and is as much of a team player as they are a proactive go-getter.

Scope of work

Editorial & narrative
- Deliver 2-3 cuts per episode (rough cut, first cut, and/or final cut)
= Shape raw recordings into compelling, coherent episodes that reflect the show's editorial standards and the thesis or intent set by the Showrunner
- Make confident narrative and structural decisions - knowing when to move things, cut things, or let things breathe
- Maintain the show's voice and editorial sensibility across every episode
- Surface opportunities to strengthen storytelling, framing, and audience engagement
- Audio production & quality
- Own all aspects of audio post-production including cleanup, leveling, mixing, and mastering to a professional standard
- Edit recordings for clarity, pacing, and listenability, including the thoughtful removal of distractions, redundancies, filler language, and technical artifacts where appropriate
- Deliver clean, polished audio that holds up across listening environments
- Troubleshoot recording quality or technical issues as they arise
- Work directly with the host and guests when needed to improve recording quality and resolve setup issues quickly without slowing down production
- Sound design & creative development
- Develop and maintain the show's audio identity - music, sound design, transitions, and effects
- Bring a proactive creative eye to the sonic experience of the show, not just reactive cleanup
- Be willing to experiment - both when the work calls for it and when you see an opportunity we haven't thought of yet

Workflow & operations
- Help improve the efficiency and scalability of the post-production process over time
= Maintain organized project files and production assets
- Collaborate closely with the Showrunner around production timelines and publishing schedules
- Support expanded content workflows over time, including clips, social assets, and video editing

Video & multimedia
- Edit and package video versions of podcast content where relevant
- Create or support clips and derivative content for social and distribution platforms
- Collaborate on evolving the visual and platform-specific presentation of the show

What we're looking for
- You're someone who can hold both sides of this role without compromise. You bring the technical rigor of an audio engineer and the editorial judgment of a radio producer. You know how to balance quality with scrappiness, and high standards with a genuine appetite for experimentation.

- You're comfortable with creative autonomy and don't need to be managed through every decision while at the same time, you're a real collaborator. You can take a clear editorial brief and run with it, and you know when to flag a judgment call versus just make it.

- You're comfortable working across both audio and video environments and interested in helping us expand beyond a traditional audio-only workflow.

- You care about the politics of technology, the ethics of power, the people doing the work of holding people, companies, and systems accountable. Our audience is policymakers, researchers, lawyers, and organizers - people who are inside this work and know when something rings true.

- You understand how to craft stories that feel substantive and consequential to that audience: not simplified, but sharp - stories with depth, resonance, and real influence. And as we look toward broadening our reach in the future, it helps if you also know how to take genuinely complicated technology and policy questions and distill them into narratives that translate to a wider audience.

Required skills and experience:
- Demonstrated experience editing narrative, interview, or conversational podcasts
- Strong audio engineering, video editing, and post-production skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Comfort working in fast-moving, iterative environments
- Ability to manage deadlines and production timelines independently
- Comfort troubleshooting recording, audio, and production issues proactively
- Based in the Greater London areaWe primarily work in Descript, Riverside, Transistor, and Notion.

You're welcome to bring your own tools and workflows into the editing process, but fluency with our core stack is important.

Compensation for this role is expected to range from 400-600 GBP per one-hour episode, depending on experience and the final scope and structure of the engagement.

This engagement will begin as a 3-month contractor role, with the possibility of extension and/or transition into a part-time or full-time staff position if the fit is strong and production needs continue to grow.
