Graphic Artist

London

Join our team at the Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism, and holds power to account. Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

We are now looking for a Graphic Artist to join our news graphics team.

On this busy desk, you will create innovative graphics that evidence, explain and contextualise issues at the heart of news stories and data projects. On a typical day, you could find yourself working with satellite images that show the impact of war in the Middle East, charting important social issues, contributing to visual guides about major breaking news events, helping with unique visual projects or the visual storytelling for in-depth data investigations.

If you're excited by the challenge of turning complex information into clear, compelling visuals that reach a global audience, this is the role for you. You'll join a collaborative, creative team that values curiosity, precision and high journalistic standards, and have the chance to make work that shapes how readers understand some of the most important issues of our time.

About the role:

Interpret briefs to create innovative graphics that evidence, explain and contextualise issues at the heart of news stories and data projects.
Design and produce a variety of visuals such as charts, explainer diagrams, illustrations, maps and annotated satellite images. Combine a sensitive use of typography with an understanding of composition and house style.
Tell data and visual news stories, using a combination of graphics and data skills. Some web development (HTML/JS/CSS) skills are also very desirable.
Some familiarity with data analysis and visualisation libraries or applications such as R or d3 are highly desirable.
Collaborate with reporters, researchers and editors, championing the role of graphics and other visual elements in the newsroom and safeguarding best practices.
Anticipate visuals that might add value to emerging stories and longer term data pieces, and look for opportunities to tell stories using innovative visual formats including design, photography and video.
About you:

Knowledge of and experience with the tools and techniques for news graphics, data and cartography.
Knowledge of a wide range of chart tools, and the ability to choose the appropriate tools for specific jobs.
A solid understanding of data sourcing, scraping and cleaning
An understanding of data visualisation best practice including the relative effectiveness of visual encodings and the choosing of appropriate colour ramps
A knowledge of key accessibility checks, and the challenges of designing inclusive graphics
A basic understanding of cartography e.g.: appropriate projection use and choropleth classifications
A keen eye for typography and design, with creative and innovative ideas about the use of photography and video for visual storytelling within data-led stories and investigations.
Ideally, you'll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
We actively encourage applications from candidates who are Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) or from other groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.
