You will be responsible for driving our entertainment and culture coverage. Yahoo's mission is to be the best guide to the internet and the world beyond. This role is central to this mission - guiding our users through the world of entertainment to help them feel informed and entertained, and to use their leisure time wisely. To deliver this you will create rich, informed, memorable, and unique stories driven by a strong understanding of audience insights that helps build loyalty, engagement and a distinct Yahoo voice. There will be a specific focus on unscripted TV and celebrity culture.You will play a key role in supporting the Head of Entertainment to develop new formats and franchises and create engaging content enhanced using interactive elements and data visualisation tools, empowering readers to come away feeling informed. Where the opportunity arises, you will support the Sales team and any commercial opportunities. Yahoo is both a content creator and curator, and journalists who join the team are challenged to think creatively to discover new ways of producing original content that delights our users and complements the content already on our site from a wide range of partners.The ideal candidate will boast a strong understanding of the UK entertainment landscape, a deep bank of contacts, and experience covering trending events including live television, awards shows, and developing water cooler moments.Key responsibilities: Writing and editing original news, explainers, polls, and engagement-focused content such as quizzes and data-based contentExperimenting with new content formats, and implementing and improving established content formats to enable Yahoo to become a distinct voice that attracts and retains users. Help to plan and execute new franchisesHelping the wider Yahoo News team by supporting and developing our trending entertainment strategy to drive traffic growth and meet our targetsTaking the lead on our coverage of live and/or unscripted television and pop culture events such as awards seasonKeeping up to date with entertainment trends and viewer habits to inform our coverage and ensure it is informative and relevant to our audienceSourcing expert input, where applicable, to ensure content is informative and trustedCommissioning and editing entertainment freelancers to support the entertainment and culture strategyWork when needed with the Sales team to develop, pitch and secure branded content and sponsorship deals.Represent Yahoo at appropriate industry events and potentially in the wider media Requirements:At least four years experience sourcing, writing and building a wide range of entertainment content, including unscripted television, for a leading digital publisherAn established network of contacts with networks, publicists, and experts in this field that will elevate our original journalism and offer partnership opportunities A strong understanding of the UK entertainment industryAn ability to use SEO analytic tools, keyword research and audience insights to drive our content strategyThe ability to work under tight deadlines and in a fast-paced environment with a proven ability to offer a different take on a big story Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with othersHas media law training, and preferably NCTJ qualified If you are an experienced entertainment journalist who is passionate about pop culture, and is interested in experimenting with new ways of reporting, we want to hear from you. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team and help shape our coverage in this area.This is a full-time contracted position. It is a hybrid role with the opportunity to come into our central London office as and when needed.
