Uplink Engineer

Greenford

The Engineer's primary role will be to support Timeline's mobile uplink operations at OB locations. Duties will include:

• Operating Uplinks - both flyaway and truck based.
• First line maintenance of all uplink & RF equipment
• Operation and configuration to a basic level, of a wide range of TV Production equipment.

The role will also require the following;

• Technical and logistical planning of jobs.
• A good understanding of IP systems and techniques.
• Dealing appropriately with clients
• A good knowledge of OB Safety procedures and regulations

The Engineer will be required to work at high levels of technical complexity, under programme or operational pressures.

A flexible approach and positive attitude is always important in Timeline.

MAIN DUTIES
Duties could involve the following;

Operating satellite uplink systems for live TV broadcasts. Single and multiple carrier links, MCPC, IP modems.
Supporting all aspects of the uplink operation, including TWTs, SSPA, cross-site cabling, power systems, video and audio routing, MPEG encoding.
Driving Satellite vans and other vehicles to and from OB locations
Effective coordination with remote earth stations, satellite providers, booking offices, MCRs and end users.
Rigging and operating RF link equipment of a many types including miniature mobile COFDM links, terrestrial links, IP links, ASI multiplexers.
Working with IP based control systems to monitor manage various devices along the signal chain.
Keeping up to date on new technologies such as UHD video, Dolby Atmos and HEVC coding.
Setting up and operating a wide range of TV Broadcast gear including camera, video, audio and record/replay equipment.
Rigging cables and remote equipment as required.
Ensuring that services are always delivered on time and to the highest possible technical and professional standards.
Planning of forthcoming jobs, liaising with clients, project managers and others in Timeline. Ensuring that the services are appropriate for clients and their budgets.
Devising new solutions, using equipment creatively and cost effectively to deliver client requirements.
Ensuring that operations are always delivered safely and that due regard is paid to the health and safety of others, Timeline staff, other event workers and the public.
Continuously monitor and optimise the performance of transmission systems.
Ensure that all required reports and logs are accurately completed and submitted on time.
Provide first line support and address technical faults in a prompt and professional manner, communicating and escalating issues as required, and ensure alternative ways of meeting requirements are identified and implemented swiftly.
Above is just a brief outline of duties, however this can change due to business requirements. You may be given additional projects and workloads from the management, and you will be expected to comply with all reasonable requests.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the following:

A passion for links and broadcast technology
Extensive experience of satellite uplinking in TV broadcasting.
Knowledge and experience of current encoding, modulation and transmission systems in TV broadcast industry.
A thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of electrical power systems, electronics and RF systems.
A good general knowledge of practical engineering would be advantageous.
UK Driving licence at least level C1.
Knowledge of Health and safety legislation as it applies to this area.
Good manual dexterity to maintain complex miniaturized devices.
Strength and resilience to cope with long busy days.
Excellent problem-solving skills
Able to work both alone or as part of a team, and to remain calm under pressure.
A positive, enthusiastic manner with an ability to react tactfully and sympathetically to requests from operational and production staff.
Customer awareness and good interpersonal skills
Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
Effective communication skills
