Technician

Newbury

To work collaboratively across the production team.

To assist as required in the provision of technical requirements, as well as undertake production get-ins, get-outs and show operation for The Watermill Theatre and touring productions.

To work with the production department to support the production, rehearsal and performance processes.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key responsibilities:

• Work as part of the team delivering lighting and sound requirements efficiently, safely, and to high production values.
• Work in collaboration with creative team members, production staff, other departments and visiting companies to ensure maximum efficiency in the production process.
• To prepare the technical equipment for use in performance in accordance with the requirements of the Head of Technical.
• Install and rig all technical equipment safely as instructed.
• Actively participate in fit-ups, get-ins, builds, production weeks, show operation, duty technician during shows, strikes and get-outs for all types of rehearsals and productions and be available for production meetings as required.
• Run and operate productions to the highest possible standards as scheduled by the Head of Technical and/or Technical & Production Manager.
• To assist other technical departments in order to meet production deadlines and maintain The Watermill's high production values.
• To be open to personal development initiatives and to train and develop in order to achieve the highest standards of safety, efficiency and operation.
• Ensure all working practices comply with Health and Safety legislation including policies and procedures emanating from The Watermill Theatre's Health and Safety policy.
• Ensure good housekeeping and undertake maintenance of the backstage and storage areas, including the effective storage and maintenance of tools, equipment and materials. Report any defects or faults not within your control.

General

• As a term of your employment, you may also be asked to undertake other such appropriate duties as and when required of you, as well as being asked to work flexible hours to suit the operation of the organisation.

• Participate in all training and development initiatives as required to include, if required, being trained in First Aid, Fire Marshalling and the use of a defibrillator.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential:

• Formal technical theatre training or qualified by experience.
• A good knowledge of lighting and related technical equipment.
• Experience of maintaining high standards of technical provision through awareness of best practice, including Health & Safety.
• Excellent problem solving, fault-finding and decision-making skills.
• Previous knowledge & proven experience of using ETC EOS series of lighting consoles.
• Interest in and passion for the arts.
• Good ICT skills, including working knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Excellent organisational skills with a high level of attention to detail and ability to manage heavy and sometimes pressurised work-loads efficiently and effectively, whilst meeting non-negotiable deadlines (First Night).
• Enthusiasm and calmness - to lead by example.
• A team-player who is personable, diplomatic and has the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels both internally and externally.
• Committed, self-motivated with good team mentoring skills.
• Ability to work at heights, lift bulky and heavy lighting and technical equipment as well as having good manual dexterity for operating equipment.
• Good communication skills including a good standard of spoken and written English

Desirable

• Previous technical experience in a Repertory Theatre and/or Receiving House
• Experience of programming and operating lighting and sound desks at a professional level
• Full, clean driving license
