EastEnders is the multi award winning soap broadcast four times a week on BBC ONE. It currently ranks as one of the most watched TV dramas in the UK tackling many controversial and taboo issues previously unseen on television in the UK. Through great writing and attention to detail the show manages to successfully balance gritty realism with high drama and entertainment to keep its millions of dedicated viewers coming back for more, on-screen and on-line, every week. The Scheduler supports the Series Story Scheduler to deliver cost-effective, high quality drama within the framework of the BBC Producer Guidelines and Corporate Objectives, under the overall leadership of the Executive Producer. The Scheduler's role is vital to the production process, not only to producer the schedules, but also as the link between the Script Department and the Production Team. The Scheduler will read and assess scripts from a scheduling perspective to generate schedules/reports for the scripts during the drafting process, to identify areas of concern and implement necessary changes to bring schedules in line with the overall plans, under where necessary the guidance of the Series Story Scheduler. They will take a proactive role in covering the responsibilities of the Series Story Scheduler during leave/sickness and work as a fully effective deputy, shared with the alternate Scheduler. The Scheduler is also responsible for the updating of all scheduling boards and charts throughout the script process, so that other departments have instant access to up to date informationMain Responsibilities The postholder will be responsible for the following duties: • To work with the Series Story Scheduler and Company Manager to accommodate requests from outside organisations and programmes to use the cast, sets and facilities of the programme• To work with the Series Story Scheduler to produce block schedules/ notes at Story Commissioning and attend the Script Commissioning meeting as required• To be aware of the responsibilities of the Series Story Scheduler and to be prepared to cover any aspects of the job in their absence• On arrival of scripts, to read, assess and generate a schedule and a report on each draft, advising the Editors, Line Producer and Production Managers as to how the scripts fit into the overall plan devised by the Series Story Scheduler• To request and proactively suggest ways of altering the script to achieve the same story but in ways which suit the budget and the time available• To attend a weekly liaison meeting with the Production Managers, Line Producer and Series Producer to inform them of the progress of each block• To consult the Series Designer and other Resources and Service departments at all stages of the script process, so that they are aware of what is being planned and have an input. To ensure that their requirements are taken into account in the scripts• To be the communication link between the Script department, Production and Design, and provide information to all regarding availability of artists, sets and shooting time• To hand over a preliminary working schedule to the First Assistant Director and Production Manager after the Rehearsal Draft of the script has arrived• To produce a document with a full explanation of the schedule, including all relevant restrictions and parameters, to enable the First Assistant Director to assume ownership of their schedule and safely amend it if necessary to suit their Director's wishes• To maintain the Scheduling Boards and online charts to a high level of accuracy, and to use them to aid awareness of the overall schedule. You should have: • Extensive and proven experience of Scheduling & Commissioning on a Continuing Drama.• Thorough understanding of the Script Process. • Excellent IT skills, to include experience of working with Movie Magic, Microsoft Excel and Word, and preferably Script writing packages such as Final Draft and Scriptwriter • A proven understanding of and the ability to handle confidential and commercially sensitive material with tact and diplomacy, with an in-depth knowledge of GDPR• An extensive understanding of the whole production process, from story-lining through to post production • Experience of establishing and maintaining office, filing and administration systems and the ability to communicate information effectively to a wide range of production and non-production personnel, internal and external to the BBC• Knowledge and passion for Continuing Dramas, especially EastEndersPeople working on EastEnders are a talented, experienced and creative bunch.
