Senior Digital and Recording Technician

Birmingham

The Senior Digital and Recording Technician is responsible to the Head of Technical Resources for the delivery of consistent and high quality technical services relating to recording facilities, digital media learning and related events and activities in the centre. The Senior Digital and Recording Technician plays an active role in studio recording, and supports the Learning and Participation (L&P) programme across MAC and on occasion off site.

Key Responsibilities

Co-ordination
Oversee the general practical running and maintenance of MAC's recording facilities and Media Studio.
Liaise with MAC's Arts and Sales & Events Teams to facilitate recording studio bookings.
Advise users on technical detail and help to achieve their requirements within MAC's capabilities.
Administer and service the technical requirements for the Digital Media course programme, liaising with the Learning and Participation team to accommodate tutor requests for staffing and equipment.
Line management of Digital Media Technicians, this will include conducting reviews and appraisals.
Create effective team rotas to ensure consistent and professional operation.
In conjunction with the Head of Learning and Participation, source and purchase appropriate materials for the Learning and Participation programme within an agreed budget.
In conjunction with the Head of Technical Resources and Head of IT, identify when equipment or resources need to be repaired or replaced; order parts and coordinate maintenance and repair.
Assist in providing effective management for offsite Learning and Participation activities.
Manage the relevant service contracts and subscriptions within the department.
Manage internal and external loans of equipment.
Keep the asset register up to date.

Studio Recording
Sound recording for internal and external users, set up microphones and other recording equipment in the studio to capture the best audio quality for instruments and vocals.
Mixing and post production work, using digital audio workstations (DAWs) to balance sound levels, add effects, and create a cohesive product.
Manage audio files and backups, organise and archive data.

Digital Media
Provide technical support to Artist Tutors and learners, including AV support for courses across the L&P programme.
Have a full understanding of the software and hardware used across the course programme, assist tutors and learners with its use.
Oversee and assess the Media Studio computer systems (Windows and Mac), liaise with the Head of IT to ensure that they are working correctly. Manage and maintain logins and course data, carry out troubleshooting of software and hardware.
Assist with live streaming services across the centre, using and maintaining live streaming equipment and liaising with other teams to ensure the highest standards of presentation.
Carry out the technical servicing of seminars, conferences and meetings.
Prepare, install and maintain digital elements of exhibitions in MAC's gallery spaces.

Maintenance
Operate, maintain and repair the equipment within the department's control, record any defects and recommend when outside assistance may be required.
Inventory and stock control of equipment, storing items securely and safely.
Proactively maintain MAC's equipment and spaces in order to avoid or minimise disruption to the programme.
Keep good standards of housekeeping, ensuring studios and storage spaces are kept clean and tidy.
PAT testing of electrical equipment.

Health and Safety
Be responsible for Health & Safety within the digital media and recording spaces. This will include:
Hazard identification and writing Risk Assessments
Creating method statements for safe working practises
Ensuring that electrical equipment is safe to use, keeping PAT testing records
Creating studio handbooks and keeping these up to date
Studio inductions
Follow established safe working practices in the pursuance of duties and ensure that visiting organisations and technicians adhere to MAC's Health and Safety policy.

Working with others
Liaise with the Head of Learning and Participation on effectively servicing the course programme; work with them to support the creative development of the programme.
Liaise with Artist Tutors on course requirements, e.g. equipment, software and studio layout.
Develop and maintain key contacts and good working relationships with a wide range of professionals, companies and users of MAC's facilities.
Liaise with and assist other Senior Technicians at MAC.
Alongside the Head of Technical Resources; Head of Sales & Events and Head of IT, identify opportunities for income generation through provision of equipment and services.

General
Keep up to date with technical advances and practices related to the job role.
Ensure that the centre works as a welcoming base and that facilities and services are appropriately provided.
Participate in training and development activities as required and provide training and development for your team and colleagues as appropriate.
On occasion provide liaison and technical assistance on behalf of MAC to external clients.
Implement MAC's Environmental Policy and consider how this role can contribute to MAC's sustainability goals.
Undertake any other duties which may be required from this post.

Experience

Essential
Minimum of 3 years' experience in a similar role.
Proven experience of Apple Mac and PC based software and hardware.
Sound recording in a studio environment.
Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
Good communication skills.
Excellent time management and ability to multi task.
Line management and staff scheduling.
Adaptable to new challenges and willing to learn new skills.

Desirable
Experience in digital video and photography.
Coordination of maintenance contractors.
Educated to degree level in multimedia, sound, design or related area.
Windows and MAC computer support.
Experience of training others, identifying areas of development and sharing technical skills.
Purchasing and stock control.
Interest in other art forms.

Practical Skills

Essential
Ability to use digital media equipment and software to a high standard.
Comprehensive knowledge of recording software (Logic Pro X; Ableton; Reaper).
Able to maintain IT software and hardware.
Recording set up and mixing.
Ability to fault-find damaged stock, identify and execute solutions for technical equipment.
Customer focussed with a helpful friendly attitude.
Organised and practical with consistent attention to detail.

Desirable
Camera operation and film editing.
Projector operation and maintenance.
Live streaming.
PAT Testing.
Live sound set up and operation.
Knowledge of DaVinci Resolve; Photoshop; Illustrator or Stop Motion Studio
