Lead Vision Mixing Tutor

For half a century, the National Film and Television School (NFTS) has developed some of Britain and the world's top creative talent. It is widely acknowledged to be the top school of its kind in the UK and one of the best internationally. In 2018, the NFTS was awarded both the BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema and the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education.

We are now looking for an experienced vision mixing professional to support the delivery of our Vision Mixing Course, which is part of our Cameras, Sound and Vision Mixing for Television Production Postgraduate Diploma.

The role is a part-time contracted job, involving approximately 50 to 60 days per year. Most teaching is carried out at the NFTS Beaconsfield Studios, with some at SKY studios in Osterley.


JOB DESCRIPTION
Lead Vision Mixing Tutor

Purpose of role:
The Lead Vision Mixer Tutor should be an experienced vision mixing professional for television with a solid understanding, knowledge and practical experience of industry customs and practices. You should be experienced in working on a wide range of TV programmes, mainly in the entertainment field, such as game shows; situation comedy and drama; chat shows; music; reality; news and sport.

As Lead VM Tutor you will:
Impart knowledge and experience to and inspire the next generation of vision mixers. Teach the craft of vision mixing in terms of cutting and timing including:
• How shots cut together
• How to cut music and work with scripts and bar counting
• How to cut sitcoms and how different that might be with an audience
• How to cut interviews and quizzes, news and sport programmes
• Teach the technical aspects of vision mixing desks in areas such as keying, programming DVE effects and how desks are set up
• Explain the function of a director and how the vision mixer works closely with this person

The role requires good interpersonal skills, tact and patience, together with the ability to recognise and foster potential craft talent, whilst also ensuring students reach the technical standards required of them. Tutors enjoy the experience of observing the students grow and develop their skills and passion for this important role in order to work professionally in the TV industry.
