Deputy News Editor (Planning)

Join 5 News as a Deputy News Editor and be part of the team making the UK's fastest growing evening news programme.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong newsroom experience who's ready to take on more editorial responsibility. You'll work closely with the Planning Editor to lead the planning of engaging TV and online news coverage, uncover distinctive and exclusive content, and guide the team to deliver impactful journalism. You'll play a vital role in shaping our editorial agenda and ensuring the stories we tell resonate with our viewers.

This is a hands-on, collaborative role that requires strong editorial judgement, excellent organisational skills, and a good understanding of how to make stories work across TV and digital platforms. You'll have a passion for storytelling and a deep understanding of the 5 News brand. You'll thrive in a fast-paced environment, be confident making editorial and logistical decisions, and have a proven track record of planning and delivering high-quality news content.

Key Responsibilities
Editorial Planning
Help lead the planning of future coverage and news events for 5 News programmes and digital platforms
Work closely with the Planning Editor to manage the editorial diary and generate original story ideas
Identify, commission and secure distinctive and exclusive stories
Plan and manage special projects and long-term coverage
Plan resources including crews, kit and logistics to ensure all stories are adequately covered
Work closely with teams in the field
Work collaboratively with other planning teams across the other ITN newsrooms
Be available to travel across the UK or abroad if required
Ability to cover News Editor shifts would be preferred

Team Management
Oversee and support Assistant News Editors and freelancers on the planning team
Lead editorial planning meetings and brief reporters, correspondents and camera crews
Set clear, challenging but realistic objectives for reporters, producers and crews
Collaborate with reporters and correspondents and support them in developing story ideas and pitches
Make informed decisions on legal, compliance and health and safety matters

Digital & Social Strategy
Identify opportunities for digital-first content
Collaborate with the Digital Producer and News Desk
Ensure stories and newsgathering are optimised for online and social media platforms

Key Requirements
Strong editorial judgement, decision-making skills and a good eye for original stories
Experience planning both on-diary and off-diary content
A drive to secure exclusive and impactful stories for TV and online
Confidence working under pressure and juggling multiple tasks
Good communication, organisation and time management skills
A collaborative approach and willingness to support others
Good knowledge of newsgathering infrastructure and digital technology
Familiarity with Ofcom regulations, the ITN compliance manual, and health and safety requirements
Awareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision making
Solid newsroom experience (minimum 2 years required), ideally with some planning or news desk responsibilities
