You'll work closely with the Planning Editor to lead the planning of engaging TV and online news coverage, uncover distinctive and exclusive content, and guide the team to deliver impactful journalism. You'll play a vital role in shaping our editorial agenda and ensuring the stories we tell resonate with our viewers.This is a hands-on, collaborative role that requires strong editorial judgement, excellent organisational skills, and a good understanding of how to make stories work across TV and digital platforms. Tell us:What the story is and why it matters nowWhat we would see on screenWho the key contributors would beWe're looking for creativity, original ideas, and a clear understanding of the 5 News brand and audience.Key Responsibilities Editorial PlanningHelp lead the planning of future coverage and news events for 5 News programmes and digital platformsWork closely with the Planning Editor to manage the editorial diary and generate original story ideasIdentify, commission and secure distinctive and exclusive storiesPlan and manage special projects and long-term coveragePlan resources including crews, kit and logistics to ensure all stories are adequately coveredWork closely with teams in the fieldWork collaboratively with other planning teams across the other ITN newsroomsBe available to travel across the UK or abroad if requiredAbility to cover News Editor shifts would be preferredTeam ManagementOversee and support Assistant News Editors and freelancers on the planning teamLead editorial planning meetings and brief reporters, correspondents and camera crewsSet clear, challenging but realistic objectives for reporters, producers and crewsCollaborate with reporters and correspondents and support them in developing story ideas and pitchesMake informed decisions on legal, compliance and health and safety mattersDigital & Social StrategyIdentify opportunities for digital-first contentCollaborate with the Digital Producer and News DeskEnsure stories and newsgathering are optimised for online and social media platformsThese are the main requirements of the role and is not an exhaustive list of duties. It is intended to reflect the nature, range, and context of the work, which will change over time.Key Requirements Strong editorial judgement, decision-making skills and a good eye for original storiesExperience planning both on-diary and off-diary content A drive to secure exclusive and impactful stories for TV and onlineConfidence working under pressure and juggling multiple tasksGood communication, organisation and time management skillsA collaborative approach and willingness to support othersGood knowledge of newsgathering infrastructure and digital technologyFamiliarity with Ofcom regulations, the ITN compliance manual, and health and safety requirementsAwareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision makingSolid newsroom experience (minimum 2 years required), ideally with some planning or news desk responsibilities
