We are looking for an experienced and collaborative Deputy Head of Wigs, Hair and Makeup (WHAM) to support the delivery of wigs, hair and makeup for the 2026 season at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre.Working closely with the Head of WHAM, WHAM and/or Costume Designers, WHAM Assistant(s) and the wider production team, this hands-on role supports the day-to-day running of the department and helps ensure the creative vision for hair, wigs, makeup and prosthetics is delivered consistently across all performances. The Deputy Head of WHAM will deputise for the Head of WHAM as required and play an active role in creating a supportive and professional backstage environment.This role involves:Department support and deputising• Support the Head of WHAM in the day-to-day running of the department.• Deputise for the Head of WHAM where required, including overseeing backstage tracks and department cover.• Assist with scheduling and supporting WHAM Assistant(s) and freelance staff.• Contribute to a positive, supportive and well-organised backstage working environment.• Attend HOD or departmental meetings when required.Wigs, hair, makeup and prosthetics• Maintain, style and apply wigs, postiche, facial hair, prosthetics, and hair/makeup for cast members, in line with the WHAM and/or Costume Designer's specifications.• Support the management of hairstyling, cutting and maintenance for the company, including pre-show preparation.• Assist in maintaining stock, equipment and consumables, supporting cost-effective use of products.• Ensure hair and makeup requirements are met for each performance, taking notes and communicating changes with the Head of WHAM and production team.• Support the training and supervision of WHAM Assistant(s) and any local or visiting hair and makeup staff.Collaboration with production departments• Work closely with Wardrobe, Stage Management and other departments to ensure the overall design and any special effects or illusions are realised as intended.• Attend technical and dress rehearsals to observe, note and assist with coordinating hair, makeup and prosthetic requirements.• Support department get-ins, get-outs and production logistics as required.Health, safety and professional standards• Support the maintenance of clean, safe and secure wigs, hair and makeup working areas.• Follow all relevant policies on safeguarding, health and safety, sustainability, and professional conduct.• Support Regent's Park's commitment to accessibility, including assisted performances.• Promote equity, diversity and inclusion, and contribute to a working atmosphere where all feel supported and respected.• Carry out any other duties normally associated with a Deputy Head of WHAM on a professional theatre production.The ideal candidate will be a technically skilled and reliable theatre hair, wigs and makeup practitioner, with experience supporting or stepping into senior departmental roles. They will enjoy working collaboratively, mentoring colleagues, and contributing to the smooth running of a busy WHAM department across a varied season of productions.Essential• Significant professional experience in wigs maintenance, styling, hairdressing, facial hair creation and makeup for theatre or similar live performance environments.• Experience supporting or deputising within a WHAM department.• Strong technical skills across hair, wigs, facial hair and makeup.• Demonstrated experience working with a wide range of hair textures and types, including textured hair, using appropriate styling and maintenancetechniques and products.• Knowledge and understanding of prosthetics and their application.• Organised, reliable and able to manage workload across multiple performances.• Flexible, self-motivated and able to work well with actors and theatre staff.• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative working style.• An understanding and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.• A passion for Regent's Park Open Air Theatre and the work we produce.Non-Essential• Experience in a seasonal or outdoor theatre context.• Experience with assisted performances or accessibility-focused production work.• First Aid or health and safety training relevant to WHAM areas.
