OVERVIEWThe Company Stage Manager (CSM) heads up the Stage Management Department, is responsible for the welfare of the acting companies and provides wider support across all departments at The Watermill Theatre. Together with the Production Manager, the CSM is responsible for the smooth running of the theatre's programme of productions, and Watermill Touring productions. The role involves working closely with the Artistic and Executive Director, the General Manager, the Production Department and Creative Teams for the shows. The CSM plays a key role within the Senior Management Team in achieving targets and developing and maintaining standards within the organisation.LINE MANAGER: The CSM is accountable to the Executive/Artistic Director and General ManagerLINE MANAGEMENT: The CSM has line management responsibility for the Stage Management Team, including any Work Experience Placements; the Stage Management Trainee, and the Theatre Technician.MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- To provide effective management to all staff under the CSM's line management. Lead on the promotion of staff welfare, development and training within the department.- Oversee performance management, motivation and discipline within the department.- Take responsibility for interview and recruitment, in accordance with WTL Equal Opportunities policy and current legislation.- Maintain a regular dialogue with the Artistic and Executive Director and keep them in touch with matters concerning the current shows in performance and rehearsal.- Allocate permanent and freelance staff to each show in an effective and efficient way.- Familiarise company members, visiting companies and creative teams with the different areas around the site, including basic instruction in fire alarm use and evacuation.CONTRACTS & ACCOUNTING- Deal with any contractual or union matters which may arise, in conjunction with the Artistic and Executive Director and the General Manager.- Ensure the implementation of employment terms for all actors and stage management staff in accordance with the relevant union agreement.- Maintain order and discipline within the acting company and stage management in accordance with the relevant union agreements.- Manage petty cash, credit card transactions, purchase orders, and all other financial transactions within the Stage Management Department.- Take responsibility for managing agreed budgets under your control for productions and maintenance.- Monitor and control overtime as required and take responsibility for the processing of timesheets for the acting company and stage management.REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE- Oversee the delivery of stage management services for all WTL productions including the daily setting up and smooth running of rehearsals and performances.- Take responsibility for the management of the theatre's rehearsal spaces and ensure that they are well prepared and safe environments.- Source and book additional rehearsal space if required.- Oversee the effective and efficient organisation of Company calls under the relevant union agreement.- Ensure production requirements are met in a timely fashion and all departments are kept informed of what is required.- Liaise with the Marketing Department to organise publicity and press calls- Liaise with Wardrobe Department to organize wardrobe calls and fittings.- Write and distribute the technical schedule for the production week- Run the technical and dress rehearsals and ensure that the schedules are kept on track.- To be present for all technical and dress rehearsals and previews and press night as required.- Oversee maintenance of current productions (i.e. any repairs or maintenance to props, furniture or set dressing) when required.- Undertake CSM work for Watermill tours if required.- Ensure any necessary PRS permissions are sought in advance of productions and PRS information is provided by Sound Designers, Composers, and/or Technicians for all WTL and visiting shows.HEALTH AND SAFETY- Together with the Production Manager, manage a well-organised, clean efficient and safe working environment in those areas used by stage management and company members.- Ensure all work undertaken by the Stage Management Department complies with WTL Health & Safety policy and practices and with current Health and Safety Legislation.- Implement staff training if and when required.- Ensure appropriate risk assessments are carried out for all WTL productions.- Review annually risk assessments for departmental areas.- Take responsibility for the accountability of Company members and staff under CSM line management during fire evacuationsGENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES- To play an active role in the life of the Watermill Theatre and to work across departments to develop a positive and engaged organisational culture.- To liaise with other departments to ensure good communication and the smooth running of the Stage Management Department within the organisation.- To take part in working groups and/or committees as required.- To contribute to scheduling meetings as required.- To undertake any other duties as reasonably required.KEY RELATIONSHIPSInternal- Artistic and Executive Director- General Manager- Production ManagerExternal- Acting Companies
