Commissioning Editor (Scripted)

London

We are looking for a Commissioning Editor for scripted productions.

What you will do
* Oversee a slate of programmes as directed by the Head of Scripted and to ensure they are delivered in accordance with the agreed editorial specification
* Ensure the programmes under your management reflect the driving imperative of the Commissioning department - which is to deliver innovative commissions on all platforms
* Ensure at all times that programmes fully meet compliance and other regulatory frameworks, referring any relevant issues to the head of scripted
* Develop and progress innovative ideas using your own initiative and in line with the Commissioning strategy set by the head of scripted
* Follow UKTV's financial procedures, ensuring all supplier agreements and payments are processed within company guidelines
* Work with the Head of Production to do everything possible to ensure that programmes within your slate are delivered within the approved budget
* Under the direction of the Head of Scripted, direct specific projects in the development process and the short listing of proposals, encouraging a risk-taking, bold and innovative approach to ideas development
* Work collaboratively within the Commissioning team to identify and nurture specific talent in line with the commissioning strategy and to establish/nurture strong links with key writers and writer/performers
* Understand the scope and purpose of UKTV's commissioning strategy and maximise the potential contribution of projects in development and production towards the delivery of the strategy

Complexity & Problem Solving:
* Develop new, innovative and creative solutions to business [and/or] departmental challenges
* Routinely deal with complex problems which are encountered during the production process and which require instant solutions, clear communication and shrewd editorial judgement
* Manage multiple projects concurrently, making use of excellent organisational skills
* Mainly work autonomously on productions once commissioned, communicating with clarity and speed with other key multiple stakeholders in UKTV as to any editorial changes in the content
* Demonstrate sophisticated ability to navigate complex issues around talent, editorial and business relationships and earn the trust of the Head of Scripted in representing UKTV on these issues
* Ensure that appropriate sign off is secured editorially and ensure that communication with other responsible departments in UKTV (including press, marketing, finance, channel and scheduling) is fully joined up.

Managing Relationships:
* Harness team spirit across UKTV and collaborate with colleagues across the business to deliver successful projects. This will again include successful communication and collaboration with stakeholders in marketing, PR, VOD and scheduling.
* Promote and display trust to build successful business relationships and contacts
* As directed by the Head of Scripted, to represent both UKTV and the commissioning team to key talent, production companies and the industry as a whole
* Demonstrate strong influencing skills within UKTV and with suppliers and talent
* Maintain regular relationships with suppliers to ensure that UKTV is the first port of call for new ideas ahead of our competitors
* Manage appropriately the message for opportunities within the network, being equally clear about opportunities which do not exist as well as those which do, and demonstrate sound judgement within these parameters about which ideas to progress and which to pass on at an early stage of the process
* Ensure that UKTV is liaising with the widest possible variety of suppliers, thereby generating an on-going diversity, breadth and volume of innovative ideas
* Actively seek out and encourage the development of diverse or BAME projects to make 100% sure that our slate properly represents these sectors of our society, both in front of and behind the camera
* Ensure that ideas are managed with the appropriate care and organisation by using the correct commissioning systems including ensuring that final responses are sent to suppliers within the time frame set by the department (currently within four weeks)

Commercial Impact:
* Be responsible for ensuring UKTV's programme suppliers understand where and how the commissioning investment delivers commercial value to the business
* Take a savvy approach making the most of UKTV's budgets and resources
* Demonstrate an understanding of the commercial opportunities for investment into original content including an understanding of the rights picture and an ability to represent this to key suppliers
* Work closely with colleagues in Legal and Business Affairs and the Programme Finance Team to explore potential co-commissioning opportunities with other broadcasters across the globe

Business Impact / Strategic Responsibility:
* Work with the Head of Scripted to execute the financial commissioning strategy for this genre
* To spot new trends in your genre including possible new subject territories, key talent and the ways in which audiences are engaging with content
* Have a direct impact on the audience through the programmes you oversee

* Demonstrate knowledge of emerging trends in viewer behaviour on linear and non-linear platforms
* Demonstrate the ability to retain focus on broad long term objectives whilst also retaining a detailed grasp of day-to-day issues
* Demonstrable a concern for results and achieving goals
* Demonstrate adequate IT skills
* Fully commit to the UKTV CLICC values as detailed later in this document
* And finally and most importantly, demonstrate genuine, burning passion for TV.

* Show a basic understanding of both BBC editorial policy and OFCOM Guidelines and the overall regulatory framework in which content creation operates
* Show a basic knowledge of legal factors, contractual agreements and corporate agreements as they affect production
* Be able to represent UKTV effectively in public forums if required
