Chief Broadcast Engineer

Llanelli

We are looking to recruit a new Chief Engineer to take over a busy engineering department in one of the UK's largest independent TV production companies. Based in South Wales you will have the experience and skill to manage a team of dedicated and skilled engineers and technicians. You will be responsible for a busy department delivering approximately 750 hours of live and pre-recorded programmes .

As Chief Engineer you will be responsible for overseeing the broadcast operation and delivering the ambition of the business, working with and reporting to senior management, as well as taking an integral part in day-to-day live studio operations.

The right candidate will be an excellent people manager who will be able to lead her or his team to achieve both their day to day duties and to reach their highest potential.

Applicants should be qualified to degree or HND/HNC level in Broadcast Engineering or a similar discipline.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

To be responsible for the overall management of:
* A busy MCR encompassing satellite downlink and fibre operations, providing video server play-out and ingest using Airspeed, Grass Valley K2 Dyno and EVS, and supporting studio gallery operations with Vision Control and VTR.
* MCR operations and co-ordination of live feeds from incoming sources through to play-outs and line recordings and co-ordination of facilities in other technical areas such as post production.
* Quality monitoring of incoming and outgoing feeds, edited content for play-out and overseeing all output to ensure the highest possible standards.
* Department resourcing of operational staff.
* Maintaining and enhancing broadcast technology across all broadcast systems.
* Providing and managing support of broadcast technology at offsite operations and secondary facility locations.
* Undertaking of major broadcast technology projects.
* Working with and configuration of industry standard file based technology and workflows.
* Managing and co-ordination of equipment movement across all operational areas.
* Managing outside broadcast operations and SNG activities.
* Planning and implementing system and infrastructure upgrades and expansion.

Specific Competencies:
* Broadcast video and audio formats HD-SDI, SD-SDI, ASI, AES, MADI plus Video Over IP etc.
* Video and audio transmission formats and operation.
* Broadcast quality monitoring
* SNG and OB operations
* Broadcast Video Servers - EVS, Grass Valley K2 Dyno, Avid AirSpeed
* Camera Channels, Vision Mixers and Routers, Sound Mixer technology.
* VTR/Server operation and Vision Control.
* Avid Post Production Systems, Media Composer, Interplay and ISIS/ Nexis shared storage
* Post Production workflows that including Content Agent, Card Agent, Storage DNA and Spectra Logic LTO systems.
* Broadcast Graphics systems such as Ross Xpression and Avid Maestro and data integration
* Live gallery management and operations including automated systems such as Avid Command, iNEWS and Media Central
* File encoding formats and digital delivery mechanisms
*Project management and delivery.

Personal qualities and experience:
* Ability to work well under pressure, especially during live events.
* Experience in the design, construction and operation of complex broadcast systems.
* Track record of technical excellence with a proactive attitude to solving problems and learning.
* Be an open, proactive, approachable people manager.
* A clean driving licence and perfect colour vision are essential.
