Shooting and Story Researcher (Talent Pool)

Salford

The Documentary Unit, BBC Studios is known for reputational series and singles and produces some of the most awarded and most watched factual titles in television. The Docs Unit in Salford produces Rip Off Britain and The One Show inserts amongst others.

Rip Off Britain is the consumer-affairs powerhouse of the BBC Daytime schedule, regularly gaining 1.3m viewers and more than a 30% share of the audience. It mixes incisive consumer investigations, compelling human stories and invaluable advice; it holds to account the companies getting things wrong, leaving people out of pocket, or - as the cost of living crisis deepens - failing to make things easier for their customers.

The One Show VT team in Salford produces around 120 Current Affairs, Arts and Special projects films for BBC One's 'The One Show' which remains the most watched factual magazine programme on TV.

We are currently looking for experienced Story and Shooting Researchers to join our Talent Pool for the Salford Docs Unit.

Joining the pool will mean that you will be offered work as and when opportunities arise. Appointment to the pool will not entitle candidates to permanent contracts with the BBC, those will have to be applied for in the normal way. The Talent Pool serves as a database of researchers who have the necessary skills and experience to work with us, and forms a group of candidates that will be considered as a priority should a short-term (non-permanent) position become vacant.

Main Responsibilities
Editorial Researchers
* Finding & developing new Consumer or Current Affairs and Topical stories; speaking in detail to case studies and experts to thoroughly develop the best and most original angle on a story.
* Scrutinising case studies, ensuring the story stands up and is suitably evidenced, with a logical timeline and explanation for events.
* Working with Story Producer and VT director(s) to bring the story to life; being the link with contributors from story inception to transmission; ensuring factual accuracy throughout.
* Working with the Production Management team to ensure all additional materials such as archive are clearable
* Supporting filmmakers on occasional shoots and through the edit.

Shooting Researchers
* Experience of working on fast turnaround shortform content with an understanding of current affairs / consumer and other editorial guidelines
* Have experience of filming on location and be adept at dealing with contributors who may be vulnerable or in a sensitive environment.
* Be confident shooting second camera / GVs on FS7s and FX6s under the direction of the PD or Director and providing technical support as required.
* Be a confident driver
* Experience of backing up rushes
* Ensuring consent and release forms are all completed on location during shoots

Are you the right candidate?
* With attention to detail that is second-to-none, you'll bring a story sensibility more tabloid than broadsheet. You'll understand our audiences, and be happy to spend much of your time on the phone to members of it - getting to the bottom of their stories and bringing them on board to share their stories on screen.
* You must have experience of casting for TV or radio, and working to tight deadlines. We're a busy, fast moving department - so you'll also need to convince us you've got the energy levels and resilience to stay motivated week in, week out, and the ability to juggle lots of stories simultaneously.
* You appreciate the legal/fairness sensitivities of telling certain stories.
* Experience of finding contributors from a wide variety of sources and communities, with a commitment to ensuring breadth of representation.
* Good writing skills
