Job Introduction

BBC Future Media's ambition is to create the most valued open digital media services in the world. We want to transform the BBC for an interactive, on-demand world and find new ways of reaching audiences wherever they are, with new formats across PC, TV, tablet and mobile devices.

Based in London, Core Services is an engineering team within Future Media Programmes and On Demand (POD) whose remit is to provide shared software services on which the BBC's online programming is based. Within Core Services, Media Services is a team dedicated to the producing of our online video and audio offerings. The team is responsible for the experience across the whole of the BBC's digital proposition.

The BBC's award winning Media Services team was at the heart of our Olympic coverage and this exciting opportunity will work on delivering the strategy to build upon that success. Media Services is at the core of the BBC News, Sport and iPlayer web sites and handles over 200 million play requests per month in RTMP, HLS, HDS and soon MPEG-DASH. Our aim is to deliver highest quality media on all devices.
Role Responsibility

BBC Online (Future Media) is looking for an Audio Video specialist to work with our media services engineering team, with responsibility for delivering the next-generation of BBC media in the best quality across four screens - mobile, tablet, desktop and interactive TV platforms.



Working to the Senior Product Manager and Engineering Manager for Media Services, you'll be responsible for ensuring the AV content produced by Media Services is of the best possible quality and provides users with the best experience for target devices and responsible for testing new distribution technologies and encoding software, documenting profiles and maintaining the BBC's encoding settings.



You'll be responsible for ensuring the appropriate selection of technology to fulfill the product strategy, monitoring industry or technological advancements, reporting on the performance of the product ensuring continuous improvement and developing key relationships both internally and externally.
The Ideal Candidate

You'll have experience working on digital media products and services, specifying and working with enterprise level encoding and transcoding software solutions, communicating and influencing key decisions, working with third party suppliers, identifying subjective and objective quality of video and audio.



To be successful you'll have experience working with key technologies in Video and audio encoding e.g.: Elemental Technologies, Cisco Media Processor/Inlet Spinnaker, Telestream products, x264 and experience in optimising encoding technologies including h.264, h.265, WebM, MPEG2, VC1 and AAC family, ideally within new media, broadcast or related media sectors. Therefore, you'll have gained broad knowledge of relevant media streaming technologies and protocols including RTMP, HLS, HDS, MPEG-DASH, SmoothStreaming and some experience at the application level in data security, media playout and streaming.
