The Royal Opera House is the major lyric arts theatre in the United Kingdom, enjoying an international reputation for excellence. The Royal Opera House Collections contain a rich variety of archives and objects documenting the history of the three theatres that have stood on the site since 1732.We are currently seeking an experienced Archivist to assist in the preservation, development and engagement with the Collections. The Collections team comprises the Head of Collections, three Archivists and a Collections Assistant. Reporting to the Head of ROH Collections, the Archivist will: Develop and maintain a detailed knowledge of the Collections and use this knowledge to appraise and acquire new material to enhance the Collections; Ensure the care and preservation of the collections stored at Covent Garden and Egham, with particular responsibility for managing the collections and the storage areas at Thurrock; Create and lead a volunteer engagement project based on the preservation of the collections stored at Thurrock; Catalogue collections to agreed standards using the Adlib database and contribute to the development of the online catalogues; Encourage access by developing and participating in public engagement activities, digital resources and provide relevant information and reader services for internal and external users; and Monitor collections on display in the theatre and the Grade I listed areas of the theatre.This is an exciting opportunity to develop your experience within a busy archive with a growing and very diverse range of archives and objects.The successful candidate will hold a post-graduate qualification in Archives Administration/Management and be able to demonstrate experience of: Working in archives, preferably special collections; Appraising and acquiring new material for collections; Managing large collections and storage areas, identifying conservation needs; Cataloguing complex collections to professional standards using ISAD(G) and experience of cataloguing databases, ideally Adlib; Providing public engagement activities and digital resources; and Providing information and reader services.We actively encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and value the positive impact that difference has on our teams.Closing date for applications: 8.00am, Monday, 12 December 2016.
