About Rupert Russell

I'm a passionate award-winning documentary self-shooter, director and producer. I have filmed in twenty countries and love connecting character-driven stories to the big picture. I prize versatility and work across all visual mediums from vérité to archive to animation.

My feature debut, Freedom for the Wolf, won the Audience Award at the Slamdance FF and was nominated for the Cinema for Peace 'Most Valuable Film of the Year' Award during Berlinale. My next feature documentary, Price Wars, was commissioned by ARTE, and adapted into a book published by Penguin Random House, and called 'one of the most important books of our time' by the Intercept. My animated webseries, How the World Went Mad, was shortlisted for the Young Director Award at Cannes Lions. My latest feature documentary, The Last Sacrifice, is currently on the festival circuit and has been praised by Dangerous Minds as 'destined to become a classic.'

My work has been covered by The New York Times, the BBC, The Guardian, Bloomberg, NPR, among many others. I have PhD in Sociology from Harvard University. I'm a member of the LGBTQ+ community and have directed commercials celebrating pride for HSBC, which were shortlisted for a 1.4 Award. I'm a dual UK-US citizen.
