Shooting Researcher

Salford

Avanti/Nine Lives are looking for a shooting researcher to join the Songs of Praise team in Salford. Interviews are to be held on Friday 9th March.
As a Self-Shooting Researcher you will be responsible for working with and to an episode p/d to initiate, research and self-shoot strong editorial content.

You will contribute creative ideas for speech (and music) items and bring the highest quality storytelling and self-shooting skills to the strand, demonstrating insight into the editorial remit of Songs of Praise.
1. Responsibility for initiating, researching and self-shooting (sometimes under direction from the Episode Producer), strong editorial content and contributors to ensure the series' continued development as a mainstream BBC One programme.
2. Provide support to your Episode Producer/Director, coming up with convincing story telling suggestions, casting the strongest contributors, thoroughly researching stories and fact checking details, ensuring at least two reliable sources and self-shooting short features - sometimes under direction from the Episode Producer.
3. Contribute creative ideas that demonstrate insight into the editorial remit of the series.
4. Co-ordinate, communicate and collaborate with the Music/Events team and the central Production Management team where required.
5. Sourcing contacts, collecting, verifying and preparing information for the production in this area.
6. Be the main point of contact for contributor liaison.
7. To write first draft presenter briefs to give to the P/D's on each feature.
8. Responsibility for working with the Production Management Team to locate additional materials such as archive; finding filming locations, helping set up shoots, initiating Risk Assessments, Call Sheets and the preparation of the relevant Release and Consent paperwork that instigates the raising of contributor and third party agreements by the finance/admin team.
9. Producing information and being mindful of social media content for the Avanti and Songs of Praise website and other social media - under the supervision of the Producer.
10. Provide draft billings/100 words on the programme under the supervision of the Episode PD.
11. Provide a draft factsheet on the episode during post production.
12. Ensure that there is adherence to appropriate production briefs and broadcasting guidelines.
Main tasks
13. The ability to undertake a variety of the work, including self-shooting, depending on your producers and production requirements.
14. Provide editorial support to your Episode Producer/Director.
15. Sourcing and researching facts, figures and information using the various research tools, being aware of all relevant media regulations, media law and the copyright laws associated with certain information gained.
16. Assessing contributors' suitability for the programme, researching and booking appropriate people and locations where necessary.
17. Booking resources and facilities under the supervision of the Production Manager and in liaison with the production coordinator allocated to the particular programme.
18. To be responsible for the initial planning of locations and the setting up of PSC shoots. Briefing crews for shoots.
19. To provide production assistance where necessary on location and for studio recordings, including ensuring production stills are taken, getting all release forms signed and self-shooting.
20. Ensure all relevant paperwork is complete including research, location and footage agreements.
21. Briefing presenters on topics, updating scripts and editing associated material.
22. Providing research to production staff in a clear, concise format and tracking down film, archive and video tapes. Clarifying archive sources and highlighting any copyright issues to the PM, Episode Producer, SP and EPs.
23. Possibly carrying out straightforward editing.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities
1. Assist Episode Producers in finding and working with OB locations to ensure the smooth running of an OB from planning to recording.
2. Provide support to other researchers where appropriate and necessary.
3. Generate comprehensive ideas; these should include ideas for story and music features and potential OBs and Events .
4. You will objectively assess the quality and suitability of contributors and other elements of the programme in a way which demonstrates an insight into the programme requirements.
5. You will assemble, collate and distil information accurately and concisely and to brief producers in both verbal and written form. To assist in the preparation of production filming schedules.
6. You will contribute to the creative treatment of an item whilst ensuring consistency in content, quality and style including self-shooting. Contribute ideas, which are feasible and consistent with editorial intentions.
7. You will locate relevant sources of information regarding locations, contributors and sequences whilst working in a pressurised environment.

Knowledge, skills, training and experience
Essential
1. Have proven success as a self-shooter on location with examples of broadcast material.
2. Have a knowledge of the subject area covered by Songs of Praise.
3. Have a knowledge and understanding of hymns, worship songs and sacred music.
4. Demonstrable experience of TV research - finding locations, contributors and generating successful programme ideas.
5. Have experience of dealing with high profile artists and agents.
6. An ability to generate imaginative and compelling ideas with an emphasis on religious story telling for TV and the ability to realise these ideas as a self-shot feature.
7. Effective team-working, team-leading and interpersonal skills essential. Experience of working alone or in a team, maintaining good working relationships with colleagues and contributors and talent.
8. An awareness and understanding of issues surrounding the use of copyrighted material.
9. Thorough knowledge of a wide range of information and research sources - especially those offered within the BBC.
10. A clear understanding of the logistical requirements of TV production and knowledge of the technology involved, especially with regard to hand held cameras.
11. Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of BBC Producers' Guidelines, BBC Legal Guidelines and BBC Health & Safety guidelines.
12. Understanding of the importance of the BBC's values of accuracy, impartiality and decency.
13. Ability to make the most efficient use of resources and to operate within financial and production plans.
