Series Costume Designer

Birmingham

Working to the Executive, Series and Line Producer, the Series Costume Designer (SCD) will be responsible for the overall budget and line management of the Costume Department.

The post holder will take responsibility for the overall costume design and implementation for the principals, guests and supporting artistes on Doctors. The SCD will be expected to liaise with other Heads of Department to facilitate the smooth production and delivery of each episode.

MANAGERIAL
To manage and lead the Costume Department in line with BBC values.
To manage both the Costume budget and the budget for the Costume personnel and keep the Line Producer and Production accountant abreast of costs with regular budget updates.
To liaise with Production Manager to plan any specific requirements for the team or episodes.

CREATIVE
To liaise with the Executive and Series Producer in order to create an overview of the Costume Design of Doctors.
To maintain the look of the regular artistes, creating and establishing the look of new characters to the programme.
To have a creative overview of all blocks, in addition to designing their own blocks.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
To take responsibility for the recruitment of Costume personnel.
To schedule the Costume team balancing artistic ambition with budget management, and ensuring that Working time leave is scheduled appropriately
To manage training within the department to ensure compliance with mandatory training policies.
In line with the ethos of Doctors, to foster a team where training and development of the team is supported and encouraged and to actively recruit at least one new trainee per year

Are you the right candidate?
It's really important you have the necessary skills we're looking for. Can you demonstrate:
Experience as a Costume Designer preferably within Scripted, on a continuing series
A wide ranging knowledge of television production processes, preferably gained within Scripted drama, and an understanding of the jobs of programme and resource personnel engaged to complete the production.
Proven ability to work to and manage a given budget
Ability to influence and resolve differences in professional opinions, particularly where conflict may exist. Resilience and stamina sufficient to sustain performance when under pressure from tight schedules.
Effective negotiating and management skills; and experience of leading and motivating teams. Encourage staff creativity.
Proven ability to construct effective design teams, taking into account relative strengths/weaknesses.
Knowledge of the internal and external resources/facilities market, sufficient to enable informed and cost-effective contractual decisions to be made.
Evidence of interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to establish credibility with colleagues and to foster effective working relationships with a wide range of production and non-production personnel, internal and external to the BBC.
Effective time-management and self-scheduling abilities.
Awareness of the skills and abilities of professionals within the costume design/fashion industries.
Awareness of corporate conditions of service, equal opportunities and health & safety policies, Editorial Guidelines, contracts, and relevant trade union agreements.
Ability to keep abreast of professional, technological and working practice changes
Good working knowledge of Health and Safety and experience in running a department that adheres to this working practice.
A good working knowledge of COSHH.
