Senior Audio Supervisor- Radio

BBC Scotland's Radio Operations is part of the wider Operations and Engineering department providing support and facilities to a diverse range of programme makers.

The Senior Audio Supervisors within Radio Operations provide specialist audio and technical craft expertise working on location and in a range of studios to deliver complex radio and multiplatform productions.

This role is based at the BBC base in Edinburgh and your primary focus will be working to the production teams located there. In addition to this, you will support our Audio team working across BBC Scotland on a wide range of productions for national and network radio outlets. Senior Audio Supervisors work across recurring output as well as assuming responsibility for leading the technical team in studio and on location to deliver the logistics and technical production aspects of the jobs in their care. You will work across all programme genres including Features, Speech and Topical, Music, Religion, News, Sport, Radio Drama, Events and Entertainment.

Working in a flexible manner with production and scheduling, you will have the interpersonal skills to work closely with production teams.

You will lead, and work with, colleagues in various radio studios and facilities on location, with a range of OB equipment including specialist sound vehicles and technologies. You will be part of a craft community committed to delivering outstanding craft skills, support and content to programme makers.

Main Responsibilities
Explore all established audio techniques and develop and introduce new techniques where appropriate.
Assume responsibility for the entire audio operation of a production, providing balance and control for the most demanding productions.
Plan and organise the technical and staffing requirements for the more complex and demanding productions, including attending planning meetings, carrying out site surveys, specifying the technical requirements, booking the appropriate vehicles/equipment and negotiating with officials and members of the public.
Ensure that the work of the audio team, and their equipment and installations are safe, and present no hazard to the public: and that all relevant health and safety regulations are applied.
Demonstrate craft skills with the ability to lead teams on demanding productions.
Provide advice on technical matters, programme resources and available techniques for colleagues, production staff, actors and musicians.
Interpret varied artistic and technical requirements, operating a wide range of equipment to meet changing technical needs.
Where appropriate, brief colleagues and production staff on developing technical procedures and when necessary assist in the training of colleagues in new methods. Advise departmental managers on technical issues.
Assist in the development of new and efficient ways of working.
Supervise, train and act as mentor for other audio staff when required. This may include leading specific training sessions and contributing to formal reports.
Represent the BBC/department in operational forums, as well as at production and editorial meetings when appropriate.
Guide teams and deploy staff and other resources in the most effective manner, liaising with managers and others as appropriate.
Act as deputy for the Operations Manager when necessary.

Are you the right candidate?
You will be experienced in operating sophisticated broadcast audio equipment including mixing desks, recording equipment and comms kit. You will have a proven track record of mixing audio including music and speech. We are looking for a team player with the ability to lead. You will have experience of leading or supervising studio and outside broadcast set ups, and will have contributed to technical projects. You will be an excellent communicator, working with all levels of stakeholders, and will be required to interpret and manage their requests. The ideal candidate will have a driving licence.
