Script Editor

BBC Children's requires an experienced script editor to perform all script editing duties on independent drama and comedy productions commissioned by CBBC and to help co-ordinate BBC pitching process for independent children's dramas.

Many of CBBC's most successful scripted shows (eg Jamie Johnson, So Awkward) are made by independent companies. The Script Editor Independents works closely with the Senior Drama Producer Independents to ensure that the working relationship between CBBC and the drama producers is strong and productive and that the scripts for independent children's drama and comedy productions are of the highest quality, conform to editorial briefs and are completed and delivered on schedule. Our shows are usually multi-platform deliveries, broadcasting on television as well as providing content for the CBBC website and we actively explore innovative narrative forms cross platform such as Dixi and Secret Life of Boys.

The role involves working closely with producers and script editors on independent production teams, advising teams on network strategies and supervising story arcs, giving detailed notes on story-lines and scripts, and helping to coordinate the BBC pitch process for independent children's drama and comedy.

Role Responsibility

Form effective working relationships with producers, script editors and writing teams on independent children's dramas in production and development
Be responsible for providing writers/script editors with sufficient information to enable the editorial brief to be met in respect of style, content, form and any other special considerations and give detailed script notes on behalf of the Senior Producer, Independents.
Where necessary to restructure and generate new storylines, working closely with independent script editors and producers, and ensuring the consistent treatment of established characters.
Liaising regularly with external script editors and producers, turn drafts around quickly and creatively and ensure all deadlines are met.
Attend story and commissioning meetings as necessary and contribute critical comments and creative suggestions.
Maintain an awareness of emerging writing talent across different platforms, seeking new material and taking steps to identify and encourage new writing talent.
Ensure that 6-16 Drama output reflects the diverse nature of our audience.
Liaise with the commissioning team and coordinate proposals for independent children's drama.
Ensure the interactive, digital creative narrative is considered and delivered alongside the television product.

Are you the right candidate?

Essential

Proven experience of script editing with a minimum of 2 years credits
High degree of proficiency in analysing dramatic material across a wide range of genres from thriller to sitcom.
An understanding of and ability to interpret editorial intentions, and to contribute to the generation of ideas and resolution of script problems.
Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills and ability to empathise with writers.
Good understanding of children's drama and enthusiasm for the children's audience.
Desirable

Knowledge of editorial and other compliance policies
A passion for and experience of digital storytelling
Thorough knowledge of script sources and the availability and potential of emerging writing talent
Creative approach to cross-platform delivery of narrative.
Understanding of copyright law, Writers Guild agreements, contracts and the legal implications of the production process.
Awareness of the financial consequences of editorial decisions
