Jeremy Vine is a two-hour flagship daytime topical discussion programme on Channel 5. We are looking for an enthusiastic and tenacious researcher, bursting with ideas, to join this fast-moving and exciting production. We want to be plugged into what people are talking about every day to make sure the programme is lively, relevant and having the right conversations. We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible and are actively seeking candidates from diverse backgrounds.
The researcher will be tasked with coming up with ideas for the programme's debates, thoroughly researching guests and topics, liaising with panelists to help create debates, as well as writing briefs and on-air graphics. They will also be required to book additional experts and guests for discussions, support the programme producer and presenter in all aspects of the show's production, and select callers to go on air. The successful candidate will need to be proactive, organised, meticulous and thrive under pressure.
Responsibilities
* Pitch, plan and research discussion topics
* Liaise with panellists to get their views on topics
* Write briefs for the presenter and guests
* Research and book extra guests and experts for discussions
* Write graphics to go on air
* Select and publish pictures for broadcast
* Screen and select callers to put on air
* Have a clear understanding of topical issues
* Support the programme producer in all aspects of building a rundown, including scriptwriting, sourcing visuals and inputting graphics
* Develop and maintain contacts
* Think clearly and decisively, particularly when faced with unexpected problems
* Assist the presenter and production team with research on show mornings, often under pressure
* Ensure stories are accurate and comply with the law and relevant regulations
* Deal professionally with members of the public and guests
* Work in accordance with ITN guidelines on health and safety

Qualifications
* An in-depth knowledge of topical issues and current affairs
* An awareness of issues that will resonate with our audience
* Be editorially creative and imaginative, coming up with ideas for phone-ins and production
* Strong research skills and pitching skills
* The highest standards of accuracy and attention to detail around often complex and controversial material
* Adept at working independently - a self-starter, comfortable at being stretched
* Excellent communication skills (verbal/written/visual)
* Ability to prioritise workload efficiently and manage multiple projects
* Excellent writing ability
* Highly organised and an effective multi-tasker
* Calm under pressure with the ability to adapt and be flexible
* Good interpersonal skills, team player with personal authority
* Enthusiastic and passionate
* Ability to work to tight deadlines
* Previous experience in daily/topical shows is desirable
* Experience of legal situations and understanding of ITN Legal Compliance procedures
* Ability to edit pictures using Avid Newscutter would be desirable
