Vox.com is a user's guide to the news. We're looking for a talented, enterprising reporter to join our identities team to cover the complicated and crucial topic of race in America. Whether you're interested in covering how people of color are voting in this election, the intersection of race and pop culture, or the systemic inequities in education and policing, the ideal candidate should be driven by an academic curiosity about how race and racism affects Americans' lives. They should also have the talent, sourcing, and subject expertise to bring deep context to major conversations on race, culture, and identity -- while writing approachable, explanatory copy.

Vox is a supportive environment for entrepreneurial writers who want to help shape news coverage and try out new, big ideas.

This reporter should have:

5+ years of writing and reporting experience or equivalent.
A deep, broad understanding of race, social science, and intersectionality, and the ability to turn lofty concepts into accessible writing for readers.
A fast news metabolism and an analytical mind: you jump on news quickly, and are always looking for the next big story.
A curiosity about how race affects people's everyday lives, including politics, class, entertainment, education, and work.
A deep well of sources and experts to guide your reporting.
A demonstrated talent for news analysis.
The ability to juggle daily reporting and long-term feature and enterprise work.
An interest in storytelling across genres (explainers, narrative, Q&As, etc.) and platforms (written, video, social, etc.).
To apply, please submit a resume and a cover letter that includes:

An explanation of what area of focus (be specific!) you would want to tackle on the race beat at Vox and why.
3-5 clips relevant clips
2 pitches for newsy explainers, each with a mock headline and a paragraph explaining what the story is about and how you would execute it
