5 News delivers distinctive programmes and exclusive stories with people at the heart of them. The Programme Editor is a senior editorial and creative role in the 5 News team, producing programmes to the highest standards and helping to direct digital output. This role requires an experienced journalist with creative ideas, sound news judgement and the ability to motivate and lead input and output teams, sometimes under intense pressure. The successful candidate must be able to make correct legal and compliance decisions to tight deadlines. This role also requires an experienced line manager who is used to developing and retaining talent.

KEY TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Produce programmes of the highest quality.
• Programme edit any programme in the 5 News stable.
• Generate running orders, making key editorial judgements to provide an appropriate mix of stories for Channel 5 audiences.
• Ensure that Channel 5 News programmes are of a consistently high standard, with distinctive coverage, innovative ideas, and stylish presentation.
• Drive an agenda that interests, engages, and stimulates Channel 5 viewers.
• Generate treatment ideas for news stories and long-term investigations.
• An awareness of the importance of digital news, a willingness to contribute to 5 News's digital output and an understanding of the different demands of TV and digital output is key.
• Hold team meetings, brief the News Desk and presenters on the programme content and their role in it.
• Make a final check of scripts and packages prior to transmission.
• Generate original story ideas.
• Make correct decisions on news values, legal issues, taste and decency in accordance with Ofcom regulations and the ITN Compliance manual.
• Maintain an overview of programme timing.
• Make decisions about changes to the running order during transmission.
• Understand budgetary requirements and constraints.
• Have overall responsibility for scripting of packages, particularly relating to compliance.

• A thorough knowledge of the news agenda both at home and abroad.
A clear and concise writing style.
• An ability to articulate and defend decisions made.
• A proven track record in television news programme making.

• A confident and capable team leader, with excellent organisational skills and leadership skills.
• Sound editorial judgement in line with the Channel 5 News agenda.
• A good understanding of key political, financial and international news, together with a feel for more popular, human interest, and off-agenda stories.
• An eye for identifying the best use of picture and graphics.
• Flair and imagination.
• Knowledge of broadcast news production techniques.
• Experience and understanding of the financial consequences of editorial decisions.
• Good knowledge of Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual.
• Awareness of health and safety responsibilities.
