This entry-level role provides opportunities for Lighting Technicians to gain professional experience within a large organisation as well as on-the-job training from the National Theatre's Lighting team to help them develop a professional theatre career.This is not a placement or apprentice position and applicants should have a reasonable level of technical ability as they will be expected to work alongside the NT's in-house teams on a day to day basis, producing and running shows to National Theatre standards.There is a 3 stage competency progression within Grade 5 and all starters join at Stage 1. You will be assessed at pre-determined intervals during the contract period and should progress up to Stage 2 then to Stage 3.It is expected that by contract end, you will have received the appropriate training and have the experience to apply for a skilled, professional Theatre Technician job (Grade 4 by NT standards).Duties and Responsibilities- Develop and become skilled in the identification, rigging, checking, focusing and operation of all lighting equipment to then effectively participate in fit-ups, rehearsals, changeovers, performances and get-outs on productions and events.- Learn to ensure good housekeeping by making sure that working areas are clean and tidy.- Participate with first-line maintenance for productions and non-productions (work lights and house lights) under supervision.- Learn how to build electrical, mechanical and electronic lighting effects & props including pyrotechnics, as required to specified designs under supervision.- Learn how to connect equipment to power ('plug and play') used on stage or in rehearsal rooms for productions and rehearsals under supervision.- Learn how to prepare and maintain accurate plots and records detailing all aspects of performance-related equipment.- Understand inventory requirements by checking against lists and plans to identify loss or damage of lighting and associated items, and notify as appropriate.- When required, to appear on stage in appropriate clothes to carry out specific lighting activities; and appear in costume to carry out a move or effect on stage.- Participate in NT training as required for this role.- Liaise closely with other technical departments and work together to promote a safe working environment and provide a positive Health and Safety Culture.Person SpecificationEssential- Some previous experience or training in a Lighting Technician role.- The desire to improve and broaden your skill within Lighting.- A basic understanding of electrical theory.- Basic competency in the use of tools for fabricating electrical props and maintenance.- Awareness and experience of health and safety legislation and practice.- Good IT skills including Operation of Microsoft packages and other related software.- Demonstrable ability to work as part of a team and on your own initiative- Creative and resourceful in problem-solving.Desirable- Working knowledge of theatre lighting for production and an understanding of their operation and control systems.- The ability to read lighting plans and ground plans.- The ability to work at height.12 noon, Friday 25th October 2019
