Junior Camera/Editor

Belfast

Pi Comms supplies many leading public and private sector organisations with various aspects of their technical and operational requirements. This includes the provision of craft expertise and all the operational activities required to produce a wide range of content on a variety of media platforms including TV, Radio, Online and, more recently, several social media platforms. We also provide broadcast facilities, design and development of technical solutions, project management of procurement, installation, and ongoing technical support to our clients.

Reporting to the Managing Director.

Purpose of the Job
To be part of the team responsible for the operation of various types of camera on shoots and small outside broadcasts, working to support a range of clients.
You will be required to work efficiently to self-edit using Avid and Final Cut Pro.
You will be required to transmit your material at times, via LiveU, File Transfer Protocol or equivalent.
You will be required to maintain a library / archive of material within an organised system.
You will be required to attend training for key positions within live TV control rooms and perform duties accordingly. This is likely to include robotic camera operations, vision mixing and captioning duties.
You will need to provide a high degree of operational & technical expertise as well as a flexible and efficient service to meet the varied needs of the company.
Main Tasks & Responsibilities
Operation & rigging of the full range of camera equipment for both relatively simple and more complex multi-camera productions in all genres.
Working to a medium level of craft complexity (including handheld camera operation) on directed multi-camera productions.
In-depth understanding of cameras, camera equipment and camera systems
To work effectively with other members of the crew in large and small teams
To assist more Senior Camera Operators as necessary.
Operation of portable single cameras in corporate productions / News & Sports News without supervision to a medium level of artistic complexity providing a representative visual and audio record of events. (Training will be provided as necessary.)
Have a pro-active involvement in story ideas from conception to completion. Have a very keen understanding of varying tech requirements and title safe platforms.
Work to a script, brief or outline of the requirements and the story's content. Select pictures and sound to compile a sequence or complete compelling stories. Help with the selection of sync and spot appropriate up-sounds to enhance the pace and feel of the story.
Keep the producer / journalist informed of progress during the editing process.
Contribution on scripts (such as to the co-ordination of the visual and spoken elements of the report. Re-edit the sequence if required, to meet last minute changes to requirements (particularly running time).
Prior to transmission, carry out any corrections as required to the pictures e.g. colour grade, aspect ratio, slo-mo, lip sync as well as to the sound.
Create text and subtitles for online/social content where necessary.
At the start of editing and filming sessions, ensure that equipment is operating to the required technical standards. Be aware of potential technical problems and pre-plan a work-around response.
Undertake lighting for single camera to a basic level of complexity. (Training will be provided as necessary.)
Carry out short form editing for clients and news rooms as required. To complete such work to meet transmission deadlines. (Training will be provided as necessary.)
To identify and implement safe working practices that support the company Health and Safety Policy.
To undertake any other reasonable duties as required.
Required Knowledge and Experience
A discerning and educated eye and a proven interest in, and knowledge of, photography & broadcast picture composition.
Some, however limited, experience as a Camera Operator / Editor is desirable but not essential. Practical tests will form part of the recruitment process.
Able to interpret the technical and creative intentions of producers, journalists and colleagues.
Excellent communication skills, tact & diplomacy and be able to establish good working relationships with contributors, colleagues and members of the public.
Willingness and ability to embrace new technology and acquire and adapt skills.
To work flexibly, both on your own, and as part of a team, whilst remaining responsive to frequently changing demands.
The resilience to undertake duties under transmission pressures. Stamina and the willingness to work irregular hours including weekends and bank holidays
Driving is an essential part of the job, so you must hold a full driving licence.
Normal colour vision & hearing.
The physical capability to rig appropriate equipment as required.

Experience
Training will be provided to the successful candidate so experience is not essential, although desirable. A willingness to work hard and contribute to the team with an interest in shooting / editing is important.
