The Horticultural Researcher will work as part of the production team on BBC Popular Factual gardening output.They will provide specialist horticultural support by undertaking independent research into any subject or relevant issue; evaluating information and presenting the material in an appropriate and timely form to the producers, directors and other programme staff. They will assist in assembling and processing programme material, including scripts and off lineediting. They will also work with presenters and contributors both in the office and on location for filming and recces and assist in any other general programme duties as required.Production work can involve long and unpredictable work patterns and there are pressures caused by tight schedules. Normal office hours will generally apply however, a flexible approach to working time is required, subject to the BBC's policies and guidelines.The Horticultural Researcher will report to the Series Producer, Producer and Director on specific gardening content.Role ResponsibilityTo support the Gardeners' World production team in the office and on location, duties will vary depending on the nature of the output and will include:Undertake horticultural research to a broad or specific brief using all sources of reference available both internal and external; suggesting strong stories and offer creative and compelling ways of presenting research material within the programmeProviding expert horticultural advice to the programme teamIdentifying locations for filming and liaising with contributors and organisationsIdentifying and selecting stock shots and film clips and making a preliminary selection of suitable material and musicAs required, to view archive material, select relevant sections and arrange viewing facilities for the producerContribute ideas for new series and programmes.The Ideal CandidateHorticulturally trained with an excellent knowledge of all aspects of planting and plant history, as well as a detailed knowledge of the gardening calendarGood research skills, able to assess information to provide accurate and engaging summaries of researchGood communication skills and the ability to establish positive working relations with a wide range of contactsGood planning and organisational skills.An interest in making engaging and compelling televisionA demonstrable interest in TV production and gardening programmes and in particular the current gardening audience and the BBC gardening output.An understanding and ability to handle confidential information with tact and sensitivity.Demonstrates enthusiasm, an interest in TV production and a desire to learn and develop knowledge and skillsDemonstrates some understanding of the BBC's editorial guidelines
