We are looking for a fluent Zulu and/or siSwati-speaking documentary-maker or video-ethnographer (self-shooter and editor). This is for an exciting research project from mid-April to mid-May (dates are flexible) in South Africa and London. It will involve conducting several 5-6-hour filmed ethnographic observations/interviews with young men exploring their lives, health, and relationships. The aim of the work is to create behaviour change interventions to get young men to test for HIV. It is desirable but not essential that you are knowledgeable about ethnographic film-making; however, it is vital that you have a genuine interest in people and culture, and an observational style of film-making. The aim of the project is to get deep into people's lives and learn about their motivations and their culture, exploring how they live and their views of sexual health. We are looking for people who are excited by interactions with others and keen to communicate their understanding about life in South Africa to us.You will attend briefing meetings in London, fly to South Africa to conduct the fieldwork, then return to London to take part in analysis and complete your editing. We will organise travel and find film subjects for you. Fieldwork will take approx. two weeks and, overall, the project will involve approximately 4-5 weeks' work (this can be flexible depending on your availability). It is essential that you are fluent in Zulu and/or siSwati, as we will need you to conduct the filmed ethnographic interviews, then edit the footage in that language. You must also be fluent in English, and you must be a competent editor. This is a very basic outline of what we do, and the dates and duration are to be confirmed. Please get in touch if you fit the requirements and we will provide more details. We may also consider applications from candidates with the appropriate language skills whose expertise is editing (FCP7) but not shooting.
