5 News delivers distinctive programmes and exclusive stories with people at the heart of them. The Assistant Programme Editor role is a mix of programme editing and writing and is a leading editorial and creative role in the 5 News team. This role requires an experienced journalist with creative ideas and sound news judgement.This role is initially offered as a 6-month contract with a potential for extension. The anticipated start date for the position is May 2019 (alternatives will be considered).ResponsibilitiesWork closely with the programme editor to produce programmes of the highest qualityResponsible for writing scripts for both the 5pm programme and 5 News TonightWorking closely with programme editors and presenters to ensure the programmes are aligned with 5 News' values and styleRegular programme editing is requiredThe APE will take key decisions in the programme editor's absence, and also take overall responsibility for someprogramme elements, and for some longer-term projectsUnderstand all aspects of programme production including editing, templated graphics, and script writingGenerate running ordersDrive an agenda that interest, engages and stimulates 5 News viewersBe responsible for shorter bulletins and updates throughout the dayMake an active and creative contribution to all aspects of the programmeResponsible for final check on programme graphics and AstonsThese are the main requirements of the role and is not an exhaustive list of duties.
