Your key responsibilities:

The Assistant Editor is at the sharp end of our journalism and production, commissioning material, making editorial decisions and managing parts of Sky News's output minute by minute.

- Assist the Output Editor to ensure that production teams are producing compelling, creative content of the highest editorial standards on TV and across all platforms
- Take ownership and accountability for the look and feel, editorial quality and relevance of TV output and content across all platforms
- Help deliver content to the highest standard across 7 days, 24 hours a day and liaise with news desks to make sure we are targeting the right stories at the right time, making the most of the teams and resources available
- Respond swiftly to breaking news in the newsroom and TV gallery, and work with the Output Editors and News Editors to make sure we are creating the right balance of content; video, text, guests, polls, graphics etc
- Work with a team of Interview Producers to deliver thought-provoking and original big name guests and debates that generate news lines for the channel
- Take responsibility for the line management of a number of production staff, giving feedback and organising training to develop their skillsets
- Support your line manager and the rest of your team by understanding the wider Sky News strategy and by putting forward appropriate suggestions for team objectives
- Contribute to ad-hoc activities and projects linked to wider Sky News initiatives
- Maintain an excellent knowledge of news and current affairs

Your skills:

- First class editorial judgment and the ability to respond swiftly and critically to breaking news
- Excellent writing and communication skills and experience of working in a fast-paced, high-pressured news environment with tight deadlines
- Comprehensive knowledge of media law and Ofcom guidelines
- Adept at producing first-class news content for TV and digital audiences
- Extensive experience of building rundowns and outputting programmes from gallery
- People management - this role will have line management responsibility
- In-depth knowledge of the news media, emerging technologies, changing audience behaviour and new platforms
- Deep understanding of audience behaviour and demonstrable understanding of how to create compelling content services that meet or exceed their demands
