Artistic Director

London

The Artistic Director is appointed by the Lyric's Board of Directors and acts as Joint Chief Executive with the Executive Director. Their key responsibilities are to:
? Set the artistic vision for the organisation and provide artistic leadership.
? Oversee all aspects of the artistic programme at the Lyric, on tour and elsewhere.
? Work with the Executive Director to set the strategic direction of the company and to ensure the Lyric operates as a sustainable and successful business.
? Work with the Executive Director to create and lead an organisational culture that is inclusive, collaborative, safe and supportive; as well as artistically bold and ambitious.

The Lyric's last three Artistic Directors have been practising artists and the ideal candidate would be professional director who, as well as overseeing the Lyric's full artistic programme, would direct at least one show a year in the Main House. However, the Board is flexible in its approach and will also consider applications from Theatre Producers, Programmers or Artists with experience of making successful work on the middle-scale.

Artistic Programming and Production
? Take full responsibility for artistic policy and work in conjunction with the Executive Director to develop and deliver an artistic programme at the Lyric, on tour and elsewhere, that reflects our commitment to innovation, excellence, diversity and inclusion and serves its target audiences.
? Oversee the producing of all work, working with the Executive Director and relevant members of the Senior Management Team, to identify and commission inspirational artists to work with the Lyric; providing appropriate advice and support to them so they can maximise their creative potential whilst working at the Lyric.
? Work with the Executive Director and Senior Producer to develop visiting company and co-production opportunities; and seek and develop collaborative partnerships with other cultural organisations to further the Lyric's artistic ambitions and share resources nationally and internationally, including the Young Lyric partnership.
? Work with the Lyric's Executive Director to ensure that our work with children, young people and emerging artists remains at the heart of the Lyric's artistic vision and programme; working with the Director of Young People to ensure the Lyric delivers work of the highest quality that meets our aims to:
o Nurture a new diverse generation of theatre artists, technicians and managers.
o Engage young people from West London - including those from socially excluded and disadvantaged backgrounds - in high quality, affordable
activities in a wide range of artforms to help develop their creative, social, personal and economic potential.
o Work with a range of educational institutions - with a particular focus on Hammersmith & Fulham schools - to deliver a top quality creative education.
? Work with the Executive Director to maximise opportunities for the commercial exploitation of the Lyric's artistic

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following attributes, skills and experience:
? A compelling vision for the Lyric's artistic development.
? A visionary theatre-maker with a genuine passion for the Lyric's work.
? A proven track-record of developing high quality, innovative and popular work for modern urban audiences.
? A genuine commitment to the Lyric's work with young people.
? An inspirational ability to articulate the Lyric's artistic vision to a wide range of stakeholders including the board, staff, artists, funders, press and the public.
? At least 5 years professional experience as either a Theatre Director, Artist, Programmer or Producer, including on the middle-scale.
? A confident risk-taker with entrepreneurial flair.
? An understanding of the business of running a theatre and the importance of clear strategic direction and meeting business targets.
? A strong and effective team leader with the ability to motivate, inspire and take initiative.
? An awareness of the social, economic and political context in which the Lyric, and the arts in general, operates
? A commitment to the cultural and social values of the Lyric Hammersmith which includes the promotion of equal opportunities and social, cultural and economic inclusion.
