The show is based on Jamie&#8217;s story, as a 16-year-old boy from a council estate in the North-East who wants to wear a dress to his end-of-year school prom, and the BBC Three documentary that followed his progress.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2217 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture1-600x338.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture1-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture1.jpg 1279w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Joining Jamie on stage was <strong>Jes Wilkins<\/strong>, the Chief Creative Officer at Firecracker Films, the production company which made the film back in 2011, as they took us through the creative process; from commissioning and creating the original documentary, to adapting the story for the stage.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/adQkW-C4-KU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" gesture=\"media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jamie revealed that the BBC Three show, <strong><em>Jamie: Drag Queen at 16<\/em><\/strong>, was made after he decided that having a film crew with him would make him feel safer attending his school prom as his alter ego, Fifi. After jotting down his ideas for a documentary, he emailed them to every production company he could find on Google. Firecracker loved the pitch, and shortly afterwards the film&#8217;s director, Jennie Popplewell visited him at home in County Durham, where they agreed to film his story.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2222\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2222\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2222\" src=\"https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20171114_193936-cropped-600x333.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20171114_193936-cropped-600x333.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20171114_193936-cropped-768x427.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20171114_193936-cropped-1024x569.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Jamie Campbell &amp; Jes Wilkins on stage for ProductionBase TV Networking<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The response to the film was overwhelmingly positive, with a huge outpouring of support on social media, and positive reviews in the press. After seeing the show, Jonathan Butterell, the theatre director at Sheffield&#8217;s Crucible theatre, decided the story was perfect for a musical adaptation, and having successfully got the production commissioned, Jamie was approached to ask for his permission to use his story.<\/p>\n<p>The writing team behind the theatre production comprised Dan\u00a0Gillespie Sells (lead singer of pop band The Feeling) who wrote the music, Tom MacRae (scriptwriter on TV show including\u00a0<i>Doctor Who<\/i>\u00a0and the sitcom\u00a0<i>Threesome)<\/i> who wrote the book and lyrics, and Butterell himself to guide the pair, who were both working on their first musical.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2221\" src=\"https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/etaj-600x324.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/etaj-600x324.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.productionbase.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/etaj.jpg 685w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The show, <em>Everybody&#8217;s Talking About Jamie<\/em>, opened in February this year to rave reviews, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/theatre-everybody-s-talking-about-jamie-at-the-crucible-sheffield-zfjk7npxb\">a 5-star rating from The Times<\/a>, which described it as &#8220;a sparkling coming-of-age musical with a twist&#8221;, with Jamie and his Mum in the audience to see his story on stage for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>With such a hit on their hands, it was only a matter of time before the show made the move to the West End.\u00a0Ann Treneman, theatrical impresario and co-owner of six West End theatres watched the production in Sheffield, and after seeing the audience reaction, and the standing ovation which closed the show, decided to take the risk and stage\u00a0<em>Everybody&#8217;s Talking About Jamie <\/em>in the capital.
