What is a Production Secretary?
As a Production Secretary, you will work with the Production Coordinator and Production Manager. The scope of the job will largely depend on the company you work for. Some Production Secretaries are junior while others in smaller companies may work closely with the Producer and Director.
The ‘Office’
Again, where you work will be largely down to the production. In some instances, you’ll be working on location, in others in an office. You’ll be expected to answer phone calls and relay messages and assist the Production Coordinator in organising accommodation for cast and crew members as they move to different filming locations.
Part of your role will also entail looking after the ‘production paperwork’. Contact information will need to be kept for everyone working on a production. Script changes will also come under your jurisdiction – you’ll need to keep note of any changes, photocopy important documents and file away contracts. Additionally, you may be expected to create and issue call sheets.
You will also be responsible for the office stock, keeping note of stationary and office supplies and ordering extra items as required.
Key Skills
- In a very admin focused role, organisational skills will be key.
- IT skills are a must-have.
- You should be confident in making and receiving professional phone calls.
- Be able to work as part of a team.
- Have a good understanding of how the production process works.
How to Become a Production Secretary
Before becoming a Production Secretary you’ll usually start out as a Trainee or Runner. You can progress from a Production Secretary into a number of roles, along a number of different routes, mainly working on the management of productions. You can progress to become a; Researcher, Production Assistant, Production Coordinator or Production Manager.
