Future Media & Technology (FM&T) is the BBC group which provides innovative leadership in the fields of future media, technology and media management. It has responsibility for developing, maintaining and updating a range of online services, including the bbc.co.uk Homepage, BBC iPlayer and BBC Search.

Future Media & Technology's key strategic role is to be the pathfinder for the BBC ensuring that technological developments extend the reach and accessibility of BBC content on any device, any time, anywhere.

FM&T's Central Editorial team, based at BBC North, will be responsible for supporting BBC IP-delivered services across all platforms. It will actively manage the BBC Homepage, BBC iPlayer and Search services which are at the heart of the user's experience of BBC Online. The team will also support all other product areas in delivering a high-quality experience by responding quickly and effectively to problems which adversely affect users or which compromise BBC editorial standards.

This will require an up-to-date understanding of the full range of editorial content offered on bbc.co.uk as well as the ability to respond to relevant audience feedback and complaints. The team will work closely with the central user management team based in London. The role ultimately reports to the Managing Editor, BBC Online.

The Central Editorial team provides cover from 0700 to 2200, seven days per week. The post holder will be required to work shifts accordingly. This will include weekend working and providing cover during public holidays.

Role

To take editorial responsibility and provide editorial leadership for one of the teams which oversee key areas of bbc.co.uk (the Homepage, inc.mobile; iPlayer; Search; A/V delivery; metadata).

To manage and rota the team of Content Producers and Assistant Content Producers to ensure a smooth 24/7 editorial operation (i.e. ensuring that content is maintained and updated to schedule, time, quality and editorial specifications on a day-to-day basis and troubleshooting as required).

To maintain an awareness of news and external events and act upon any issues that might affect BBC Online services.

To respond to internal and external feedback and questions, act as a point of referral for the team, and refer upwards as necessary.

To liaise with content, design and technical teams during the scoping of new projects to ensure that the resulting product/service reflects the output and that, operationally, the product/service can be managed efficiently.

To co-ordinate with technical colleagues and third parties to plan, schedule and deliver key improvements to the service's output, ensuring updates or new releases meet time, quality and editorial specifications.

To establish and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and external partners or suppliers such as Red Bee Media and Siemens.

To establish, build and maintain relationships across the bbc.co.uk editorial teams and with other BBC stakeholders including legal, rights, scheduling and operations.

To liaise with MC&A, Press & Publicity, and other sources of stats/audience behaviour to evaluate service performance and user behaviour and respond to issues in line with editorial/programming strategy.

To ensure that all content published/delivered via the service meets BBC Editorial Guidelines.

To check that all relevant copyrights and contracts have been cleared and ensure that content meets legal guidelines.

To mentor and provide on-the-job training to less experienced colleagues.

To appraise members of the team and make recommendations for their professional training and development.

To provide leadership in the absence of the other Duty Editors, where agreed by a senior editorial figure.

To be aware of personal financial authority limits and to ensure that this authority is exercised in accordance with BBC financial arrangements.

To work to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines.

To work to the BBC's policy on Health and Safety.
