Head Of Production

HEAD OF PRODUCTION JOB SPEC

AFC's Head of Production works closely with the CEO, Creative Director, and CFO. S/he leads a team of people including producers, editors and an operational team who contribute to the originally produced and growing content output as well as the look and feel of the Channel.

S/he is a very hard worker, with responsibility for his unit/team delivering programmes, both long form and short form, on time, to the highest possible creative quality, and especially to budget. Experience of helping to shape original production in editing, of working on popular and primetime shows, and extremely strong TV writing skills are essential.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Work closely with the Sales Team, the revenue generating arm of the company, to Identify projects and come up with creative ideas and solutions for sales clients.

2. Work with and oversee producers, whether internally or externally, to visually drive films, both in terms of style, structure, and scripting, whilst encouraging innovation.


3. Lead, Direct and motivate Assistant Producers, Production Assistants, Editors, and Producers ensuring they have clear and realistic objectives, consistent with AFC Values. Give clear briefings, monitor performance always, give constructive feedback, lead by example and treat team with consideration whilst ever mindful of deadlines pressures and financial considerations.


Required Skills and Experience:

1. Wide ranging knowledge of television production processes and a track record of creative programming. Substantial experience of self-shooting desirable. A technical and editorial understanding of lighting and sound issues would be useful. To work with our Head of Operations and Finance department to oversee the rollout of AFC in HD.

2. Effective and excellent negotiating skills ability to secure best rates for staff and key talents as well as developing production staff. Interpersonal and communication skills strong enough to establish credibility with colleagues and to foster strong working relationships in an extremely diverse region.

3. Resilience, stamina to sustain performance when under pressure and when working to tight deadlines. Ability and flexibility to cope with high volume of different production projects, all of which must be thoroughly researched, investigated, and shot in-house/externally to ensure absolute accuracy and excellent creative judgment. Planning and revising production budgets and schedules.

4. Ability to generate creative ideas and to think strategically about new programme and departmental ideas and an innovative approach to programme making. Awareness of current popular factual programming, great ideas, and ability to see them into programme making.

5. Thorough knowledge of standard production filming guidelines such as BBC Producers Guidelines, knowledge of and ability to implement hazards and Health & Safety regulations when filming, solid awareness of legal issues relating to programme making.
