Development Manager

London

As an experienced Development Manager with an understanding of broadcast technologies coupled with a proven track record of leading a project based area that supports a climate of rapid change and the ability to plan and deliver successful projects on time and to budget, you will be in your element managing our Broadcast Production Systems team.

The Systems Development function within the BBC's Technology, Distribution and Archive division is responsible for developing and delivering the solutions which support the BBC's goals of providing cutting edge, industry leading solutions which transform the way people work.

The department comprises the development and delivery teams which deliver technology solutions across the BBC including the systems for the digital production of programmes for TV, Radio and online platforms, broadcast scheduling, corporate web sites, the BBC intranet, the BBC's Digital Archive and the enabling digital production tools being deployed into Media City UK.

The systems developed by the group are deployed across BBC locations globally, built on a combination of technologies ranging from Java, Linux, Microsoft .NET running on Windows platforms, to applications running on mobile platforms such as Apple OS and Android utilizing a suite of commercial and open source technology products including Apache/Tomcat, JBoss, Oracle, MySQL.

As the Development Manager you will manage the detailed activity of the various project streams within the group: (Jupiter production, Jex, JFE, Badger, Raven, BigTed and a variety of other applications). You will provide progress reporting to appropriate management boards, and to the Head of Broadcast Systems Development. And promote use of development process, versioning and release of software. You will also interact with support and business groups within the BBC to ensure smooth rollout of systems

Experience:
• Experience at a similar level with a proven track record of leading a project based area that supports a climate of rapid change, preferably within a broadcasting environment
• Demonstrable experience of project management with a track record of successful delivery to users/clients in terms of time, cost, quality and benefits
• Good analytical skills, sufficient to accurately assess user needs and propose suitable technical or process solutions
• Demonstrable understanding of relevant technical systems and the issues arising from commissioning and running them
• Experience of implementing new initiatives and driving / leading process and people change.
• Demonstrable supplier management experience
• Strong negotiating skills
• Up-to-date general knowledge of developments in relevant fields, including broadcasting, programme-making, IT, communications and related industries
• Strategic thinker with leadership style which encourages wide participation in decision making

The salary available for this role is flexible to a certain extent, dependant on the level of skill and relevant experience of the individual.
