Artistic Director

Glasgow

The National Theatre of Scotland celebrates its 10th Birthday this year. Since its launch in February 2006, the Company has been involved in creating more than 254 productions in over 244 different locations, attracting audiences in excess of 1.5 million. With no building, the National Theatre of Scotland takes theatre all over Scotland and beyond, working with existing and new venues and companies to create and tour theatre of the highest quality. It takes place in the great buildings of Scotland, but also in site-specific locations, airports and tower blocks, community halls and drill halls, ferries and forests.

The Board of the National Theatre of Scotland is seeking to appoint an experienced Artistic Director to build on the successes of the Company's first two Directors and lead it into its next phase.

The Artistic Director is the lead officer for the Company and is responsible for shaping the artistic policy, programme and productions to the highest standards, as well as for holding overall accountability for the organisation's strategic, operational and financial well-being. The Artistic Director will be supported by the newly-created senior position of Executive Producer, who will be recruited shortly after the Artistic Director.

The ideal candidate will be an ambitious and inspirational artistic leader in the performing arts with a track record of success as a theatre-maker and/or creative producer and proven experience in programming, commissioning and delivering ground-breaking, exciting work. He or she will have well-developed interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and enthuse individuals and teams and build effective partnerships across a diverse range of sectors, disciplines and organisations. Previous experience of overseeing substantial budgets and fundraising from a variety of sources is important.

The Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland plays a key role as a cultural leader for theatre and the arts in Scotland and, as such, the ability and willingness to act as an ambassador for theatre and Scotland in the UK and overseas will be essential in fulfilling this role successfully.
